R/Edmonton, let’s do better
  • Thank you. I appreciate the kind words.

The bot brings in content from R, but it's been set up to do so for a specific reason. In order to attract new users and subscribers, new content has to be posted. Kind of a chicken/egg scenario.

The bot pulls from the Hot category of r/Edmonton, allowing it to at least make use of preliminary user filtering from R. Without that, it would be pulling from New, providing much lower qualities of content.

If you have any recommendations or suggestions, throw 'em at me! I'm all ears (or eyes, in this case)

  • R/Edmonton, let’s do better
  • I had reached out to the r/Edmonton mods, and they were adamant about not moving to Lemmy.

  • Hitchhiker, pixel art I drew for my daily art challenge [OC]
  • I don't believe so. Why don't you start one?

  • A cool guide about Biodiversity in the garden
  • I am, in fact, human! Response sent via DM.

We hope to continue helping thousands of Albertans with transportation security, prevent the sale and purchase of stolen bikes as Bike Index Ambassadors, and we're doing a bike drive for Sports Ce > *** > Just in case this is tl:dr Edmonton Bike Swap is on May 11th at MacEwan University. But, if you have questions then please read below. > > First, we'd like to thank Edmonton Reddit Moderators for allowing us to promote our non-profit bike swap event once. Full disclosure that we have a $2.00 admission that will be used to repair the donated bikes. More below. > > Why we do what we do - we’re Chris and Laura and we didn’t feel safe buying or selling bikes online so we founded, fund, and operate Alberta Bike Swap a non-profit that provides a safe place to buy, sell, and donate bicycles. > > If you have a bike to sell we’ll tech check that bike and run the serial number through our software to verify bike ownership because no one wants to buy a stolen bike. > > Want to buy a bike? Stand in line, suggest no later than 10:00. IF you can pay the $2.00 admission that $2.00 will go to repair the hundreds of donated bikes. > > Have a stolen bike police report? All the bikes will be entered into the swap by 1400, please come to our event at 1400 so that you can see for yourself that your bike isn't in our event. The police and RCMP have seized bikes from online sales and pawnshops based on what we do, and insurance companies use our paperwork as proof. > > We added children's bikes to our events because it helps families. > > We work with over 30 groups to rebuild donated bikes too and have over 80 partners that help us help others. I've got the shittiest... er most diverse... lawn on the block
  • "The cobbler's children go barefoot"

    One of my favorite sayings.

  • Linux clipboard app which has functionality to paste multiple things after copying them in one go.
  • I use Diodon. I've set it up so that copy is CTRL+C, Paste is still CTRL+V, but what I call "Super Paste" is SUPER+V, showing a list of the last 20 items that were copied, including images.

Great utility, especially paired with FlameShot.

The only thing is that the Super Paste always pastes unformatted. Not a big deal, but something to consider.

  • til: Benford's law: real life number are not evenly disribued, 1 occur 30% of the time
  • This is a bit weird. I was just listening to Infinity 2 today (great book. Totally recommend), and there's a section where the characters use Benford's Law to prove reality. I then had to look it up myself.

Just a super weird coincidence...unless Lemmy is listening to me...

  • What operating system do you use on your main computer?
  • Linux Mint 21.2. it's a solid OS and supports all the games I like to play. I started and ran a business on it as well, so I have no neee for windows anymore besides proprietary software and hardware. I just dual boot in those cases.

  • Request for Mods!
  • I am as well. Between this and the occasional check-in on Mastodon, I've got plenty of social media to keep me entertained during some idle times. That's all I really ever wanted.

  • What are the best fediverse alternatives to youtube?
  • Pipes is a great way to view YT content without logging in. No ads, clean interface, and you can log in to save playlists via cookies on your local machine, so no interaction with the server. It doesn't use the YouTube API, so Google can't say much.

  • Reminder: Reddit is gone. Your community *is* official. If you're a mod, you're just as good as a reddit mod.
  • Thank you for this. The imposter syndrome is real, especially starting what were some larger subreddits (gifs, coolguides, Shiba, and helping with Today I Learned). It's been fun and I'm super happy to see the interactions and genuine conversation. We're certainly our own community, and I'm so happy the fediverse is growing into something I can easily burn time on here and there.

  • post more than 1 pictures?
  • I've been using Pixelfed.Social and it's been working great to hosting images and gifs. For videos, I'm using Dalek.zone, a Peertube instance. Both can have their links shared here and they work great.

  • Lemmy.ca passed 3k accounts.
  • Agreed! I don't need an endless supply of content, just enough for coffee and bathroom breaks. There's plenty to catch up on in that time. Plus, there are still relevant news stories and happenings, so the fomo is kept at bay.

  • This dog
  • What a jerk!

  • TIL that a 28 year old Russian man went to the doctor for coughing up blood and having chest pains. The doctors diagnosed it as cancer, but it turned out to be a fir tree growing inside his lungs.
  • The amazing 'discovery' was apparently made when they opened up Artyom Sidorkin, 28, to remove what they thought was a serious tumour.

Mr Sidorkin had complained of extreme pain in his chest and had been coughing up blood. Doctors were convinced he had cancer.

"We were 100 per cent sure," said Vladimir Kamashev, a surgeon in Izhevsk in the Urals. "We did X-rays and found what looked exactly like a tumour.

"I had seen hundreds before, so we decided on surgery."

Before removing part of the man's lung, the surgeon investigated the tissue.

"I thought I was hallucinating," said Mr Kamashev. "I asked my assistant to have a look: 'Come and see this – we've got a fir tree here'. He nodded in shock. I blinked three times as I was sure I was seeing things."

Medical staff said that Mr Sidorkin must have inhaled a seed, which later sprouted into a small fir tree inside his lung.

The spruce, which was said to be touching the man's capillaries and causing severe pain, was removed.

"It was very painful. But to be honest I did not feel any foreign object inside me," said Mr Sidorkin. "I'm so relieved it's not cancer."

There was no independent verification of the surgeon's claims.

  • Anyone else using plexamp?
  • Arguably, this entire community could be considered an advertisement for Plex....

  • Oak Island aka "The Money Pit"
  • I tried once, and got through about 10 minutes. There are a ton of other resources out there that are far more informative and entertaining

  • Request for Mods!
  • No worries! It's pretty low impact at the moment. Not too many people posting about stuff that has to be removed. Truthfully, I'm hoping to make this more of a community space without a ton of restrictions. r/Edmonton got a bit weird and cliquey on Reddit and I'm hoping we can do it differently here.

If you ever change your mind and want limitless power as a Lemmy mod, let me know!
