Highly rated book you DNF
  • I searched the annals of the books subreddit way back when and could quite literally only find one other user besides me who couldn't stand A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. I tried two separate times to read that book and just couldn't do it. I understand the premise of crusty old guy is soft and mushy on the inside, but ffs he is SUCH a massive prick in the beginning I just could never get past it. I also read Anxious People by him and couldn't stand it, so I think maybe this author just isn't for me.

Super noteworthy wise I quit A Tale of Two Cities on like page 4 lol, but that was more because I didn't understand that style of English than anything else.

  • Alright, I want your food recommendations!
  • Hi and welcome to Rochester! Not sure how hole in the wall these places are per se, but I like Jeremiah's for good wings, Dibella's for good subs, and The Nutcracker Restaurant for wraps/sandwiches.

  • What are you reading this week? [July 3-July 9, 2023]
  • I'm reading the final book of the Dark Tower series, which is also titled The Dark Tower. It's been such an amazing journey, and I can't wait to see how this epic ends. Still have plenty of time though as it's a little over 1000 pages and I'm on like page 400 lol.

  • I finished Song of Susannah today June 19th (spoilers inside)

    Hi,

I'm new to Lemmy so idk if there's spoiler marks or not so beware spoilers for dark Tower series books 1-6:

I wanted to share with you all that I've been reading the series and enjoying it IMMENSELY. like holy shit they're so good. I absolutely love fantasy and Roland's world and quest has totally enthralled me. The Gunslinger was probably the hardest for me mostly because I felt it was slow and I had no clue wtf was happening lol. I'd say so far my favorite has been Wolves of the Calla (which I read in a week, hot damn) closely followed by The Waste Lands, then The Drawing of the Three, Song of Susannah, Wizard and Glass, and Gunslinger last. I've loved them all though.

Anyways I work night shift and I will often read when things are slow, and so I finished Song of Susannah this morning. I didn't realize until my husband commented on the date that TODAY is June 19th!!! How fucking weird lol!! I finally find out some of the significance of 19 and 1999 because that's the date of Kings accident, and of course June 19th 1977 is when Roland and Eddie go see Stephen King in the book! I feel like ka is messing with me that I happened to finish the book, and specifically this book, which ENDS with Kings accident excerpt of that date. Wow lol. Anyways just wanted to share and if you comment please please be kind and don't spoil anything from the final book, The Dark Tower, for me!!

    Long days and pleasant nights!

How does everyone feel about Stephen King?
  • Oh hi! My husband just joined your community actually haha, and I plan on heading over there shortly!! I've quit Reddit because of all the fuckery going on over there and I've been absolutely DYING to tell somebody who has read the Dark Tower series: that this was totally an accident because I work night shift but I finished Song of Susannah TODAY JUNE 19TH!!!! I was like no fucking way lol!! So eerie. And my husband also started The Gunslinger today!! Ka! I can't wait to see how this series concludes, it's been such a great ride.

  • Love seeing all of the recommendations in this thread! My husband has read almost all of them, he's got about 20 books left (most of which are the Dark Tower books) and his top 5 favorites are 11/22/63, Needful Things, Duma Key, Gerald's Game, and Joyland. His 5 least favorites so far are Dreamcatcher, The Eyes of the Dragon, Hearts in Atlantis, Sleeping Beauties, and Insomnia.

I myself have read The Outsider and and The Institute and immensely enjoyed both. I just finished Song of Susannah, book #6 of the Dark Tower series today, and I can't wait to finish it. It really is an incredible story/saga/epic. I plan on reading much more King but I plan on staying away from the darker stuff, as I'm a lot softer/sensitive since I've had a child lol.
