Seriously, almost all the posts are just doom scrolling. And yes, I'm aware of the irony
  • Two things

    1. Politics is for Power provides a pretty good model for thinking about this https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Politics-Is-for-Power/Eitan-Hersh/9781982116798

There's a lot of political hobbyism on social media in general and Lemmy is really bad for it. Take for example the constant Elon Musk rage bait. No one is doing anything productive with that information. They're just getting mad

    1. Social media, in general, isn't a good way to get informed. It makes you feel really in touch but when a lot of the time you're getting biased and polarizing that is often as enraging as it is unproductive

We treat politics like entertainment and it's making our politics worse. Personally I try to limit my exposure to politics that I don't think will be productive. It might feel like the most important thing in the moment but it's often a huge waste of time

  • "Suffering builds character". anarcho-primitivists, probably
  • That's a false dichotomy in a lot of the comments here

    We do both

Carbon capture isn't so we can continue to use fossil fuels. It's because once we get to 0 emissions we still need to draw down the carbon in the atmosphere

An ounce of prevention is almost always worth a pound of cure but we're still going to want that cure because every extra tenth of a degree we can bring the Earth back to normal is going to be worth it

I can't find any evidence that they were founded by her but she did help found the climate action fund which has donated a large amount of money to them as well as Extinction Rebellion

I think she's probably genuine but that's also besides the point. Whether she has alternative motives or not all that really matters is whether the activism is helping or hurting

  • Screw you guys. I cast what I want.

If this plays like wish it means you have to put the blue eyes white dragon in your sideboard in order to play it during competitive play

Of course this card would be allowed in competitive play but I think the idea of putting a blue eyes white dragon in your sideboard is very funny

  • Skincancer.org is my source for darker colors being better protection

    https://www.skincancer.org/blog/dress-to-protect-5-things-that-affect-how-well-your-clothes-block-uv-rays/

I don't have the highest degree of confidence in it but it makes sense to me that absorption matters more than reflection because a lot of the reflected UV will be going through the shirt and onto your skin

That's why materials like linen aren't as good for UV protection. They're light weaves and let a lot of light through, still

  • I'm NOT surprised. As a programmer I really miss having the antonyms that Ruby gives you in other languages

Having to parse what '!includes' means is harder than just 'excludes' and, while that cognitive load is small, it builds up!

  • More people make 'no-buy year' pledges as overspending or climate worries catch up with them
  • I'm sure everyone choosing to do this has their personal reasons. Personally it reminds me of why certain people go vegetarian/vegan: they think this kind of consumption is bad and they're trying to resolve cognitive dissonance. It's a way of creating new habits that more closely align with their values.

Another way it has vegan/vegetarian parallels is the social effects. Tips and tricks you find of social media can make it easier to do. If you've been thinking about taking the pledge then seeing it on social media can act as a reminder. Lastly, if enough people do it then it gets easier. But nothing groups, clothing swaps, etc. makes it easier for other people to participate in a virtuous cycle.

I doubt this will move the bottom line, but I do think it's a good thing and it doesn't need to be wide spread to bring value to people participating
