Supporting EU Innovation: My Shift Away from US Tech Giants
  • I've been in this argument before, and despite not being one to bolster or support piracy, the EU or National alternatives are non-existant.

So yes, i will use piracy to access the content.

  • I see...

Well, opting for a solution rather than other is mostly a personal decisison.

You need to weight the pros and cons for yourself.

  • Instructions unclear.

    You say repost again?

  • How to Mastodon?
  • more like mastodon and lemmy, maybe bluesky, over META and reddit.

    I don't think i've looked at pleroma.

  • I have to say, i am quite impressed with mastodon already, hopefully they add some QOL like native GIF usage etc.

Bluesky i'm a little bit on the fence about, but i got to say i'm inclined to give it a try

  • How to Mastodon?
  • It's perfectly understandable, and it wouldn't be the internet if someone didn't throw some vitriol my way!

I'm not mad, annoyed or pissed, i'm just happy that i can find engagement, positive or not in my very first post!

I'm very hopefull and confident that i'm doing the right thing, even if i'm having reddit withdrawls symptons already!

    But i'll get trough them!

  • How to Mastodon?
  • The context, in this case, is quite important.

It feels like you locked in on that sentence and didn't read the thred.

That's the same thing as walking into a conversation and taking it entirely out of context before dropping a nuke on the subject.

I re-read my comment, and considering the whole context, i cannot see how someone would think i was saying i was leaving, particularly with the sentence that comes before.

    This is the internet though.

I hope you have a great day.

  • like i said in my post, EU solutions are somewhat behind on its development, but the core tennants seem to be much better than their EU counterparts.

There will be limitations and cumbersome situations, but i was there when gmail started and it was absolute garbage... People using it, commiting to it, gave them the userbase and funds to develop their solutions.

  • How to Mastodon?
  • I think you got us wrong... We're planning on joining and trying to understand it.

    But hey, free vitriol!

  • How to Mastodon?
  • i can't see anywere that it will work as a base SMS app on adroid...

could you show me some feature review where that is shown?

  • I went for the Proton Suite for email/cloud/password management solutions!

Got a 25% off the 2 year plan (might still be available) and i CANNOT recommend it enough.

  • Supporting EU Innovation: My Shift Away from US Tech Giants
  • with the addons available it works really really well.

Even on my android box i have fouund myself using it more than the subscriptions i had ( wich were most of them )

  • Supporting EU Innovation: My Shift Away from US Tech Giants
  • The image is a bit outdated.

I went to firefox and will very likely be moving on to librewolf soon.

  • How to Mastodon?
  • The problem with the messaging apps is adoption as far as i can tell, and it'll be a cold day in hell before you can get someone to change from a free, easy to get option to something paid.

I will look into it though, as i am looking for a substitute on android for the normal SMS/messaging app, maybe threema has the desired functions.

  • How to Mastodon?
  • Curious myself.

I've done reddit and Twitter, going for lemmy and bluesky.

Currently working on removing all my META connections so i can nuke that account to, and mastodon and pixelfy will surely follow.

For messaging i'm probably going for signal, being a long time user i'm probably just going to take a stand on whatsapp, if people want to message me, either move to signal or use SMS.

  • If you have a 7 yo system on Win10 you will very likely not have any issues moving to Linux.

Unfortunatly, as i have done the plunge on most of the solutions out there, i run a couple of integrated systems on my dual-pc setup that, unfortunatly, just don't have linux ports yet.

Currently i am battling the AndroidOS and Social networks problem. I have to admit, Proton has been a godsent, even though i do feel like they're a bit on the pricey side.

Windows (and the peripherals) and Steam are going to be tough for me though...

But i'll keep looking and trying new things, i'm sure we are on the verge of a massive direction shift, one that will push more EU/Open Source solutions to the forefront.

It is, i hope, just a matter of time now.

  • Supporting EU Innovation: My Shift Away from US Tech Giants

I've decided to make some significant changes in my digital life. I've taken the plunge and am rooting out most US-based services from my usage list. This includes canceling all my streaming subscriptions, putting my Reddit account in cold storage, and deleting my Twitter accounts. Additionally, I'm in the process of removing my presence from Meta platforms. This shift is part of my effort to simplify and re-evaluate my online habits and dependencies.

One of the primary reasons for this change is the importance of bolstering the EU economy. By supporting European companies and services, I believe we can foster innovation and growth within our own region. This not only strengthens our economic independence but also encourages the development of solutions tailored to our specific needs and values.

In my exploration of EU-based alternatives, I've found that while they may be slightly more expensive, they often offer superior technology and usability. The focus on quality, privacy, and user experience in many European products aligns with my personal values and expectations. By investing in these solutions, I'm not only supporting local businesses but also benefiting from advanced and reliable services.

This transition is about more than just personal preference; it's about contributing to a stronger, more self-sufficient European digital landscape. I'm excited to continue discovering and integrating more EU-based services into my daily life.

Despite the costs and effort needed to make this change, I would like to encourage and motivate everyone else considering doing the same. It will undoubtedly be tough for a while, but if we push forward together, it will be better for all of us in the end. Let's support each other in this journey towards a more independent and innovative digital future.
