Loblaws Boycott

I'm just hearing about this now and I thought it would be worthwhile to share.

There is a Canada-wide boycott of Loblaws planned for May 2024 (and beyond if you're able). This includes any store under the Loblaws umbrella such as: Atlantic Superstore, Shopper's Drug Mart, Save Easy, Your Independent Grocer, No Frills, Esso, and so on.

The goal of the boycott is for Loblaws to reduce prices by 15% and remove "member only pricing" so everyone has access to savings and deals.

The boycott is organized by a group on Reddit. You can find more details about it in this Reddit Thred

A happy byproduct of this will hopefully be more business going to small locally owned stores in your area instead of the two grocery giants. I'm in the Fredericton area so I can recommend Victory Meat Market and Peter's Meats as excellent alternatives with better products, and similar or sometimes lower prices.

Here's hoping there's enough engagement to produce a significant drop in Loblaws sales and they take the voice of the customer seriously.

Defeated CEOs are now conceding hybrid working is here to stay
  • I think that might depend on who you're hiring though. That's the same line our boss told me when they pushed me back to the office. But in the time since then, we have hired several new staff who actually prefer to communicate digitally. They will email, teams, phone, or text me with questions before actually seeking me out in person.

  • I'm on day 744 and my streak is just an alternating pattern of fire and ice. I hate it but I think I hate the idea of dropping all that progress more. Did you stop using Duolingo altogether or just switch to practicing when you want to?

    Eclipsefest

In case you've been under a rock lately, there will be a solar eclipse on the afternoon of April 8 and lucky us, the path of totality will pass over Fredericton.

This is shaping up to be a once-in-a-lifetime event. There will be activities around the city on the weekend leading up to the day, followed by several watch parties the day of.

Cloud Scientists Reveal The Best Places To See April 8’s Total Solar Eclipse
  • Yeah, I'm really hoping it ends up being clear skies. The next one isn't until 2079 (for this area) I think, so this one will probably be my only chance. Really, I could just stay home and see it but I'm just on the edge of the path so I might as well drive the hour or so and get right on the centre. I'm planning on taking the day off, leaving early, and making a day of it.

‘Gaslit by doctors’: UK women with endometriosis told it is ‘all in their head’
  • Shit like this happens all the time. My wife had her ovary twist and went to the ER because she was in extreme pain. She sat in the waiting room for 10 hours since they thought she was just overreacting and couldn't be in that much pain. Once she actually got to see the doctor he "jokingly" asked if she possibly could have caught an STD (we've been together for 14 years by that point) and decided to take a blood sample to at least say they did something. When results came back with an EXTREMELY high white blood cell count, they actually started to take her pain seriously. She was in emergency surgery within a few hours after that. Had they ignored her any longer it would have ruptured inside her and potentially died. Coincidentally, when they went in to untwist it, that's when they realized she also has endometriosis. After years and years of being told by her doctor that periods are painful and just deal with it, she finally had proof that it was actually not normal to be in that much pain every month. I really don't understand why a woman in pain is not a concern but if a man has a headache, then they leap into action.

  • Temporarily embarrassed millionaires pt. 2
  • I suspect if someone who makes 50K a year has millionaire connections, those connections would have probably helped them by now and not have to wait for them to die.

I could be wrong, money seems to make people selfish and greedy. So maybe the millionaire would rather hoard their wealth than let the 50K person get any before they die. But they're still nice enough to let them have something after they pass?

  • Freddy Fright Fest Is Back

From the website: >Welcome to the 3rd annual Freddy Fright Fest! The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (Fredericton Branch) have joined forces with Paramedic Association of NB (Nightmare on Smythe Street) to bring you Fredericton's premiere Halloween event, in support of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre and Fredericton Hospice.

    >*Please note that ticket times are slotted for the hour and you are welcome to line up anytime during that period. It does not mean you get directly in when you arrive as there may be people with the same time slot, but selling tickets by the "hour" helps reduce the time standing in line :)

    >We will have a bar (for 19+), silent disco, trivia, and a variety of entertainment throughout the week.

It is being held at the Capital Exhibition Centre and tickets are $20.
