  • Agreed. It feels like a bunch of people broadcasting to the void with megaphones. Threaded forums are 100x better

  • Yes, I love Factorio

  • First heat death reported in Portland’s 100-degree weather
  • I’m from the area. Another “fun” fact I saw on KGW News this morning:

The six hottest August overnight lows have all been in 2021-2023. Last night’s tied the 73 record for the day. The hottest low ever was during the 2021 heat dome where it only got down to 75 overnight (in June)

  • When you run out of newer TV shows and movies to watch, what are old favorites you go back to?
  • Battlestar Galactica (the reboot

Thanks for reminding me. I need to re-watch that sometime.

  • BlueJeans, Verizon’s Google Meet competitor you’ve never heard of, is shutting down
  • Good. I remember it being shitty when I was forced to use it at a company a couple years ago

  • The priorities on this planet are bizarre. They’re spending 480,000 hours investigating people for trying to… protect what we have left? 🤦‍♂️

    That's disgusting!

  • Why I assume “fixes” meant to prevent collapse won’t work
  • “ human civilization will achieve a steady-state economy one way or another. Either we will plan for it and execute a plan that takes us as a global society on average down to a fraction of what we consume today. Or, nature will take its course and we will collapse down to a steady-state level of consumption”

  • This isn't unique to video games*. It can happen with anything that you spend a ton of time on, and either burn out on or start to develop more refined taste in. I've had it happen with:

    • novels
    • board games
    • movies
    • people

You start to see patterns, tropes, or just plain get burnt out on something. It's a sign you either need to take a break, or that your tastes have simply become refined enough that you require a higher bar to find something interesting.

I'm in my 40s and definitely don't play games as much as I used to. But there are still times I get sucked in and have a great time. Most recent example: Cosmoteer, a spaceship building game with loads of freedom and creativity. I'm also looking forward to the Factorio DLC and the Dyson Sphere Program combat update.

Edit: case in point that I can still get excited about games: I finally tried Shadows of Doubt and, wow, what an interesting game. It's like a Deus Ex shadowy sneak-around world with detailed voxel simulation.

    * though the enshittification phenomenon is a real thing, and why people should play more indie games

  • I celebrated my 5th anniversary of being vegan yesterday. I didn’t originally start doing it for climate reasons, but I know the meat and dairy industries are huge sources of pollution so I’m glad I’m on it.

  • Hopefully one of the DLCs adds land vehicles 🤞🏻

Fuck Amazon's shipping process -- I finally ordered from one of the "little guys"!

It seems like over the last year or so, Amazon has made the calculation that they can save 10 cents on not packing things properly, and only 0.1% of customers will be bothered enough to return the item\*.

For many basic consumer goods, like a new spatula or something, it doesn't matter. But when I'm spending $40, $60, $70 on a nice hobby RPG book or a board game, it sucks to have it arrive with all the corners smashed in.

So I finally ordered my most recent core rulebook from a random FLGS in another state. And... it arrived beautifully packed and without damage!

This may not be an earth-shattering revelation for many people; however, it sure felt good to me to take a small stand. :-D

Incidentally, I spent \~$7 more overall on the purchase. But for me it was totally worth it.

    \* made-up numbers; I don't know the actual ones

What do people think of Shadowdark?

It's a new system whose Kickstarter raised $1.3 million since February. I'm curious about it but would like to hear more people's thoughts.
