The planet’s vision is getting worse: 50% of the population will have myopia by 2050
  • Did you read the paper from my 2nd link? There seems to be a growing body of evidence that suggests that is indeed possible:

Similar to the increase in the prevalence of persistent median arteries of the forearms, the prevalence of other anatomical features such as spina bifida occulta (Henneberg & Henneberg 1999; Solomon et al., 2009; Lee et al., 2010), tarsal coalitions (Solomon et al., 2003) and fabella (Berthaume et al., 2019) has increased over the last 2–3 centuries. Evidence indicates that changes in the natural selection pressures acting on these specific anatomical features could have caused microevolutionary processes, leading to the observed increases in prevalence rates (Henneberg and Henneberg 1999; Solomon et al., 2009; Lee et al., 2010; Rühli and Henneberg, 2013; Berthaume et al., 2019).

Obviously actual research would have to be done to confirm or deny it in this case, and I probably should have stated my original thought a bit more skeptically.

  • The planet’s vision is getting worse: 50% of the population will have myopia by 2050
  • I was reading over the paper and found the source of that particular usage:

Furthermore, in a study by Henneberg and George (1995; Am J Phys Anthropol 96, 329–334), has suggested that increasing prevalence of the median artery during the 20th century was a ‘possible secular trend’.

LOL. I kinda want to follow that citation for the full quote.

Edit: I found the original source that gives some further context:

The occurrence in historical times of changes in human body size and in the timing of events in postnatal development, such as, for instance, sexual maturation, is well known and documented. Such changes occurring from century to century or decade to decade are known as "secular trends."

So I guess it's actually domain specific jargon.

  • Oh Joe...
  • It should be the media's responsibility to thoroughly fact check both parties. If that means they have to pre-submit their primary answers and read them off a teleprompter, then so be it.

You're right, it wasn't a win, but it should have been.

  • it's a big deal jack
  • I'm not really a golf person, but from passing knowledge, he said his handicap was +8 IIRC. I think that means that on an average course, he'd typically hit 8 strokes above par.

Trump seemed incredulous of his claim, so I'm guessing that means Trump has a higher handicap?

  • Oh Joe...
  • I mean, he certainly did say that he wants to increases taxes on the ultra-wealthy.

It's not a foreign policy issue, but it's one that would be unpopular with any rich donors so it perhaps demonstrates some amount of integrity.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to defend the US. Their foreign policy is stinkier than blue cheese.

  • Oh Joe...
  • He did, and I'm not trying to downplay that in any way. He also called for peace, though, whereas Trump said he was also pro-Israel but thought Israel should finish what they started.

  • Oh Joe...
  • I don't know... I see what you're saying, but does the president not have the power to take a principled stance on the matter? Maybe I'm being too naïve about what's realistically possible, but ultimately intended policy decisions have to start at the mouth of the nation's leader.

He needs to firmly acknowledge and denounce the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

  • Tofu Katsu w/ Golden Curry

I was going to make pizza on Friday, but I messed up when stretching my dough, and it seized up, so I had to rest it and re-rise, and so change of plans!

I had left over curry and just made the tofu cutlets by shallow frying in a small pan to minimize oil usage.

As always, any questions or feedback welcome, and happy to provide recipes if anyone wants them! \_\

    Za #4, Pepperoni Pizza

I happened across some store bought vegan pepperoni, and decided I'd do one of the most simple pizzas in existance: the NY style pepperoni pizza. It totally wasn't because I was lazy and it takes like almost zero effort.

My dough caught on the peel as I was shimmying it on to the griddle, so I kinda got this weird teardrop-shaped pizza. Oh well. (:

There's really just something very comforting about a basic-ass slice like this. It's not fancy or pretentious, just delicious.

    Pizza Friday #3 - Sweet & Savoury

So I've decided to make pizza every Friday this summer. This is \#3, but I declined to post the first two because they contained a slightly controversial brand plant based meat substitute.

This one has vegan blue cheese, caramelized onions, button mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, balsamic reduction and pear slices. I meant to add a bit of arugula, but I forgot. A little fresh basil probably would have been good too.

Oh yeah, I was going to have it last night (y'know, on Friday like I said) but some stuff came up so I had to delay a night.

Feel free to ask for any recipes or whatever! I generally follow Adam Ragusa's NY style pizza recipe, but he's not vegan so if you don't want to give him additional traffic, I can probably answer any questions you might have.

If you have any suggestions for my next pizza, I'd love to hear it! \\

Indian dins! Daal, Aloo Gobi, and Tofu Makahni on Kuska (Biryani) Rice

I've been learning to cook all sorts of Indian recipes lately. The samosa are store bought, cuz who has time for that. Everything else is made from scratch. I'll probably get around to makeing my own samosas too, some day.

Will post recipes if anyone is interested. ^^

    NY-ish style pizza

A riff on the classic NY style pizza. Obviously with all the extra toppings, and a cheddar style "cheese", it's not in any way accurate, but it's what I happened to have on hand.

    Dough & Sauce:

    • Adam Ragusea's NY Style Pizza v2 [Content Warning: recipe is not fully vegan. It contains cow milk.]

    "Cheese":

    • Smoked cheddar style vegan grating block

    Toppings:

    • Red onion, mushroom, vegan sausage, fresh basil
