  • I have been using Brave browser with the crypto stuff disabled.

The mere fact that you have to "disable the crypto stuff" tells me all I nee to know about Brave Browser, and it's enough to ensure I'll never install it.

  • First they came for /r/pics ... now Reddit are coming for the individual personal subreddits
  • My personal subs that have been private for ages recieved messages saying they will inform me of "further steps" if I refuse to open them up.

One of them is /r/[myRedditUsername] that I use as a kind of scratch pad that I can access anywhere (I've since self hosted a wiki) that they are demanding I open up. Like seriously, no one would ever be interested in whatever is there.

They can get fucked. I deleted all of the posts and comments on all of my accounts and requested GDPR requests on all of them. reddit can get fucked.

I hate clickbait titles like this (directed at Herald not you OP). They intentionally leave out the "in donations" part in the headline to get people to click their bullshit.

Is it possible to disable image uploading and images being cached to my server from other instances?

I have searched and not come up with the solution, I apologize if it's obvious and I have somehow missed it.

I would like to disable uploading images on my instance, and more importantly, disable the caching of images from other instances onto my server.

It's run on a tiny server, and I simply cannot afford a larger server to deal people uploading large images on instances I'm federated to being cached onto my server.

For an example, this post https://lemmy.ml/post/1450558 was federated to my server and the image was cached on my server automatically (https://lemmy.dustybeer.com/pictrs/image/19336064-e45f-4abf-b5c2-0ce7b69a1b7c.jpeg?format=webp)

It's not a big deal for a couple of images, but I can very quickly see this exploding and using up all of my (relatively tiny) disk space.

It also seems like a great vector for a malicious party to bring down an instance they don't like if they know it's caching images.

Again I apologize if I've just missed this in the docs and my searching, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Speed up a post that has a lot of images?
  • I just wanted to add, in the official lemmy documentation they say to use a third party as well, not the instance itself.

    https://join-lemmy.org/docs/users/02-media.html?highlight=images#images-and-video

Note that this functionality is not meant to share large images or videos, because that would require too many server resources. Instead, upload them on another platform like PeerTube or Pixelfed, and share the link on Lemmy.

This also served as a good reminder to look into disabling image uploads on my instance. I can't afford a massive server for it to host other peoples images which is both size and resource intensive.

  • How will the July 1st plastic bag ban affect you?
  • Oh that makes sense, the supermarkets I go to removed them ages ago. We have reusable cotton bags we use for supermarket items when they are needed.

I'm super glad to hear about the plastic stickers. I vaguely remember hearing about that before. It's a great change.

  • Speed up a post that has a lot of images?
  • But then, if anything happened to that service (downtime, billing, ending of free services, etc etc), the images could be lost.

If anything happens to the instance you are uploading them to, they'll be gone as well.

My personal opinion is it's much better to offload images into a service meant for images. A lot of lemmy instances are put on very small servers, with very small resources (including drive space). It's not fair to the owners of those instances to upload a bunch of large images to them.

There are plenty of options out there for image hosting. https://imgbb.com/ or https://imgbox.com/ seem to be highly recommended.

  • How will the July 1st plastic bag ban affect you?
  • I honestly thought it was already in place. So no new changes for us here.

  • Google IS selling all my personal information in Google Domains to Squarespace?
  • They aren't third party. They are buying Google Domains and all of the customers that come with it. If you don't like it, don't continue to use them. It happens every time a company gets bought out, the customers are part of that package.

  • Discord is opening the monetization floodgates: get ready for microtransaction stores and paid 'exclusive memes'
  • And people wonder why I prefer forums. The "Discordifcation" of everything is out of control.

  • Which one: Revolt or Divolt?
  • There's probably a matrix instance someplace, which would be my personal preference. Maybe someone has some suggestions.

It can also be self hosted, but I'm sure there are hosted instances out there for this kind of thing already.

  • Ok, as a user on lemmy.ml, I'm pretty sure none, or close to, of my posts and comments are being federated.
  • You're showing up on my personal instance.

Things do sometimes take a bit to come across, and I tend to get a bunch of posts from a single instance come in at one. It does make a bit of a pain at times as I won't see anything at all from an instance, then my front page fills up with nothing but posts from one community within an instance (that's how I came across this thread).

  • Frustration mounting as high school teacher strikes roll on
  • I do appreciate it mate. I do know they can affect all of us, especially if they aren't being educated properly. I fully agree education is extremely important for any society to succeed. Cheers

  • Frustration mounting as high school teacher strikes roll on
  • There are two teacher unions. One union, which is for primary teachers, accepted an offer after strike action. The secondary school teacher’s union rejected the offer and is thus continuing to strike.

That makes sense, thank you. I know I'm very ignorant of the situation, and willingly admit so.

As I said I don't have kids (and willingly admit I don't like kids at all), so I tend to blow right by things like this. Kids have never been on my radar, so all I see are the headlines about it. Thank you for the explaination, I hasn't realized there was more than one teacher union.

  • Frustration mounting as high school teacher strikes roll on
  • I will freely admit, I don't know a lot about these strikes and I do not have kids, however it seems like teachers strike multiple times a year. I can imagine the frustrating dealt by people actually affected, as I (and again this is my personal selfishness) am pretty fed up hearing about it all the bloody time.

It seems like they don't have an actual goal with striking, and just strike because it worked last time so why not do it again and get a few more cents added. Why not have a proper strike where they ask for a proper wage once and stick with it instead of these constant strikes?

It could just be the reporting or something, and again, I freely admit I don't know a lot of about it since it's such a constant stream of seemingly new strikes that I just pass right by it. I guess it's a bit like hearing car alarms going off constantly. I no longer pay attention because it happens so often.

  • *Permanently Deleted*
  • Personally I don't think further fragmenting an already tiny community further is helpful

You can certainly not click on them or block people that post them but I really don't think the (glances at sidebar) 91 people that have used this instance in the past 6 months are really enough to further fragment.
