vlemmy.net mysteriously disappears
  • Sad to hear the biggest no-defed instance is gone, non-defederation is completely the spirit behind why I moved to Lemmy`

  • https://noc.social/@developer tag on mastodon test
  • I believe (but I'm not positive) that was on account of something else; the script had thrown a network-related exception overnight (I'm in east coast USA, UTC-4) and I didn't restart it until I woke up. I read a little more about the API specs today and the more I learn, the more I realize I'm doing hacky stuff instead of utilizing the native commands that do what I need. I've made a couple changes since then https://git.teets.us/grapemane/MastodonDreamBot/commit/6ba075987b1f3910cd462b9cfa151ba1386bd36e

  • Looks like Nitter is dead (for now?)
  • Ah shucks. I just created a twitter account the same day I created my account here, for the purpose of drumming up interest for my game that's in development. They're making it less and less appealing to be on Twitter by the day

Off-Lemdit Instances Subscribe + Block Buttons Broken UI
  • Thanks for linking the bug report! I left the note about it working on mobile to hopefully help them troubleshoot and resolve it quicker

  • Off-Lemdit Instances Subscribe + Block Buttons Broken UI

    !

On desktop breakpoints, the Subscribe and Block community buttons are not buttons at all, but non-interactable text. If I size down my browser to mobile breakpoints, the buttons function as expected. Just wanted to pass this info up the chain!

This issue is not present on in-federation communities

    DriveWorld homepage is officially online!
  • I'm self-hosting a docker container with an image called ghost as the webserver https://ghost.org/

It was extraordinarily quick and easy to setup and looks professional IMO. I would highly recommend.

linuxize.com How to Setup Passwordless SSH Login

In this article we will show you how to setup an SSH key-based authentication and connect to your Linux servers without a entering password.

How to Setup Passwordless SSH Login

This is probably old news to people that have been self hosting, sysadmining, using Linux, etc. for a while; but I came across this a couple months ago and it was quite an easy process to configure, and it's saved me a lot of keystrokes since setting it up.

  • Awesome! Thanks again for putting so many resources towards this instance!

  • I'm curious if there are certain behaviours that should be done sparingly to be a good steward of your hosting - e.g. does it eat up a lot of HDD space if I subscribe to many communities outside of this instance?

The gif I posted in the other comment is only 1 second and is ~1/10th of an MB, is that content now going to sit on your drive taking up space forever?

  • What kind of potato are we running on?
  • Very cool, I'll need to keep an eye out for opportunities like that. My homelab is a measly i7 from 2012 with 16 gb of ram. I will be hosting gameservers soon for a racing game I'm developing and have begun to look into cloud servers. I'm honestly not crazy about cloud servers but I don't know how I can get enough network upload speed otherwise.

We share the enjoyment of self hosting! I've been using XWiki like crazy lately, documenting my game as I work on it, leaving myself notes on my various docker containers and their configurations, cataloguing the different hot sauces I try. I'm also quite keen on ownCloud for file sharing, Gogs for git repos, and Redmine for project/ticket management.

What kind of potato are we running on?
  • Feels pretty quick from Florida, USA! Curious what led you to have such a powerful computer sitting around?
