  • Well, unexpected, but not shocked. Some big questions come to mind immediately.

    • Do you think Nyck got a fair chance? He's underperformed, but wasn't given long
    • Will Ricciardo be able to get any results in that car? Has he gotten over the problems that led to his McLaren exit?

  • I noticed this with Perez, had a good start to the season, then the second people start talking about a title race, his performance fell of a cliff. Hope he can get out of his own head, otherwise I wouldn't be surprised is Horner and Marko are interviewing replacements.

  • I'm gutted for Oscar missing out on the podium, just got unlucky with the pitstop/safety car. But that's Formula 1. Still, getting P4 in your rookie year is a great achievement, I think he's a real talent. And brilliant for Lando, that was excellent defending to hold off Lewis on much faster tyres.

Red Bull getting 11 in a row is just crazy, I think the count might grow. Uninspiring drive by Perez, did what he had to do and dragged the car up the field, but he should be finishing 2nd every single race in that car. I think he's badly underperforming.

And Ferrari ... lol. 4th and 5th to 9th and 10th. Awful day for them.

  • 18-year-old Formula Regional driver killed in Spa crash
  • I'm not sure if I should post the video, but having watched it, it's extremely similar to the crash that killed Anthoine Hubert. Looks further along the track - at the start of the Kemmel straight - but very similar.

    Accident description

It's not clear how (very bad weather conditions, lots of spray/fog), but his car spins into the middle of the track, stops fully sideways/perpendicular to the track, then is T-boned by another car.

    Absolutely tragic.

Government plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda ruled illegal
  • How many hours of work and how much money has been spent on this tabloid fantasy policy? What if we used all of those resources to ... actually tackle the (massive) asylum backlog. Absolutely inevitable this was going to be shut down and so much effort has gone to waste pursuing it.

  • Yuki Tsunoda happy at AlphaTauri, still pleased with “attention” of teams outside Red Bull
  • De Vries is nearly certainly gone from the other AT seat. Yuki's had a couple years at AT and I'm not convinced he's proved himself enough to move up to the 2nd RB seat, but if other teams are interested, we could have both ATs up for grabs. Checo needs to get over the last few races and start getting results. If he can't, I think RB would start to look at options there. Then is Sargeant bringing Williams enough sponsorship money to make it worth the pretty dreadful results (and the car rebuilds)?

I think it could get pretty silly, particularly towards the back of the grid. I bet Charles has his fingers crossed for an open seat at a big team, I think he's too pissed with Ferrari right now not to.

Stubbornly high inflation increases pressure for interest rate hike
  • Does anyone know why our inflation rate is staying so persistently high? Other peer countries seem to be improving and we're getting worse and worse.

  • Berlin, Intel strike deal on $33 billion chip plant after months of subsidy talks
  • The article says "leading-edge" but I really wonder what processes will be used here, so far the new fabs being set up in the US aren't being tooled for the latest EUV 3nm etc. stuff, but older nodes. The older ones are still very important, and any way to remove dependence on potentially disruptable single sources of chips is great, but would be awesome to have proper cutting edge chip manufacture in the EU.

UK homeowners face huge rise in payments when fixed-rate mortgages expire

More than a quarter of UK homeowners on a fixed-rate mortgage are heading for sharp increase in monthly payments before the next election, in a financial timebomb that will rock the Conservatives just as voters prepare to choose the next government.

With the Bank of England expected to increase its key interest rate next week for the 13th time, figures shared with the Guardian by UK Finance, the banking industry trade body, show more than 2.4m fixed-rate homeowner deals will expire between now and the end of 2024.

The prospect of millions of households facing a dramatic rise in borrowing costs comes after a week of renewed turbulence in financial markets as City traders bet the Bank rate would reach close to 6% before Christmas.

Does anyone else have to stop thinking about HS2, because it's so infuriating that it's been gutted?

From a grand project encompassing most of England's major cities, improving connections up to Scotland and most importantly, reducing congestion on the West Coast Mainline.

To a line from Old Oak Common, to Birmingham. Total. We need to be working on HS3 and HS4 right now, not cutting HS2 back to the bare minimum. Makes me so angry.

Johnson’s aide nominated for peerage appears to have exaggerated time spent at Number 10 - Tortoise

The woman who is set to become the UK’s youngest ever life peer appears to have exaggerated the amount of time she worked at Downing Street on her public profile. Charlotte Owen is one of seven names approved by King Charles for elevation to the House of Lords as part of Boris Johnson’s controversial resignation honours’ list.

Her LinkedIn profile states that she worked as a special adviser for the former prime minister from February 2021 until October 2022.

However she is not named alongside others in Number 10 in the annual report on special advisers published in June 2021. She is named in the same report from a subsequent year as working half for the prime minister and half for then chief whip Chris Heaton-Harris.
