How are lemmy and other fediverse platforms profitable?
  • I know you probably have seen a lot of answers from others already and my answer would probably be the same as others (for obvious reasons) but I am going to answer anyway because you told me not to lurk. Please note that I am not an expert (or even somebody who knows much about business) so don't expect my answers to even be half correct.

If by profitable you mean "not making a loss" then probably yes as long as if there are enough donations to cover the expense of running the server.

But if by profitable you mean "making enough money to be sustainable long term" then my answer would be most likely not because it's not designed to make money (unlike ahem...certain platform)

  • POLL - Will you stay on lemmy?
  • If the subreddits that I am usually lurking on have migrated here then I'll have no problem with staying on Lemmy. And if there's a mobile app (preferably on Android) for browsing Lemmy (and the fediverse in general) then even more reason for me to stay here.

But for a definitive answer? Yes

  • Reddit admins removing the NSFW tags from subs with porn in them
  • They are so desperate about trying to recover their loss from the blackout that they managed to mess up this badly which can potentially cost them even more.

Guess all their talk about the protest being pointless isn't really holding up after all. I mean, they couldn't even keep their narrative consistent.

  • Redditors, how do you like Lemmy?
  • Lemmy UI is very easy to use, and fast too. Also, I like the concept of federation (though I have no plan in hosting one) and the fact that the community has been very welcoming so far also help with me being able to enjoy browsing Lemmy.

Of course, there's the obvious problem of lack of content but if the subreddits that I usually lurked on have fully switched to Lemmy then I would have 0 issues with fully switching to Lemmy regardless of the lack of content.

  • Is Lemmy your first time on the Fediverse?
  • Not really, I heard of Mastodon after the Twitter shit that happened but never really used it. Until now and then I actually like Lemmy more than Reddit even though I only spent like 20 minutes here. Might be because I only ever used Reddit's official website and app (so never really touching 3rd party apps)

  • Welcome reddit refugees!
  • Hello! I owned a 3 digit karma account on Reddit (Which has the same username as my Lemmy username but without the 's'), and now I am here after seeing the dumpster fire that is Reddit. So far the site is pretty nice to use and simple enough that I know how to use it.

I haven't deleted my Reddit account, mainly because I want to see how Reddit would respond after the protest (so after June 14th). If they didn't reconsider their action and instead continue with their decision then remind me to delete my Reddit account.
