What light novel(s) have you read last week, and what do you think about it? [February 19 - February 25]
  • Monster Tamer Vol 1-3: Surprisingly good. It is an isekai series where the entire school gets transported to the new world. The world building is surprisingly good. Humanity in the other world is being pushed back by a continent spanning forest filled with monsters. Humanity only manages to survive with the help of the heroes transported to the world every century. The characters are also well written. The trauma the characters go through leave lasting impacts in a realistic way. I can't talk much about it without spoiling it, but the ending of the third volume is fantastic. I suspect this series isn't more popular because the first volume is by far the worst. It starts out seeming much more generic before becoming better in the second and third volumes. It also shares Failure Frame's highly cynical view of human nature. Monster Tamer is comparable to that series, and to "Loner Life" as well, with Loner Life being more comedic and Failure Frame being more of a power fantasy.

Reincarnated Mage with Inferior Eyes Vol 1-5: It was a fun read, but not very memorable. Similar to Misfit of Demon King Academy in that the protagonist is re-incarnated into is same world many years later to see that general magic levels have greatly decreased. I don't have much to say about it as it seemed to be what one would expect based on the synopsis of each volume.

The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects Vol 1: I like a good kingdom building story but was disappointed by this one. Its one of those "things happen" type stories where the plot is a series of events without much logical connection between them. A lot of events could be re-ordered in the story without changing anything. It doesn't give the reader much reason to keep reading after setting down the novel. Personally, I have no interest in reading the next volume in the series.
