In de Verenigde Staten daarentegen zou het zo zijn dat werknemers zo laag betaald worden dat werknemers eigenlijk leven van fooi. In de Verenigde Staten is het daarom bijna ondenkbaar om geen fooi te geven en wordt het meestal gezien als een zware belediging als je geen fooi geeft.
