I feel like this is how any MMO must be for the top players. Once you've learned game mechanics to the point that every aspect of the game turns into an efficiency simulator, it's easy to get frustrated at details of the game that few notice.
Add micro transactions to the mix and there's an awful concentration of the sunk cost fallacy. Good on him for being able to pull the brakes.
Brighter Shores gameplay not tick based
Brighter Shores strikes me almost as a sister game to Gower's defining MMO
![As the creator of RuneScape tells me about his new MMO, it sounds like a dream game for folks who want a "nice, relaxing escape" – especially RuneScape fans](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/d7df674e-e405-4c0b-942a-003edb251c67.jpeg?format=webp&thumbnail=256)
An interview with Andrew Gower where he explains the design is relaxing and isn't based on ticks, allowing for a more "responsive" feel.
In another bit of the interview, he says Fen is an entirely self funded team of eight, and that he's enjoying working at his own direction with no money men trying to sway the ship. There's also mention of a "premium pass" that'll allow access to all content, to be released in an episodic format. Presumably, this'll be akin to Runescape membership.
I agree on the name. My first thought was 'greener grass'. It also doesn't surprise me they would have regret both in the short and long term after they faded away.
The desire to not have to 'manage' a growing company is understandable. It's a shame they had to watch as the direction of the game they loved veered away from their vision.
Not just that but it seems they worked essentially since their departure from Runescape to develop an engine and a custom language all leading up to this MMO. An impressive undertaking to be sure. Can't wait to see how it pays off.
It will be nice to have all the players on the same level to start off. I suppose that was the appeal of the Fresh Start worlds. With a fresh economy and the lack of game knowledge amongst the player base, I'm sure it'll be a great time.
Ah I'd actually seen that before. Didn't realize back then that is was by the Gower's. They've put quite the effort into all this. I'm looking forward to trying it out when it launches.
I wasn't aware they did a smaller game as a test. What was it called?

If you haven't seen, the Gower brothers have made a new RPG. Apparently it aims to be less of a grind. Launching on Steam later this year. Anyone else planning to give it a shot?

I saw the post by @[email protected] from a couple weeks ago and thought to post how I recreate this every time I play. This is Android though, and I'm assuming there aren't similar apps on Apple devices but I could be wrong.
All it takes is an orientation switching app. I've used a few, some don't work as you'd expect, but Control Screen Orientation by developer ah_apps has been doing the trick for the last year or two. It doesn't crash like some of the others I'd tried out, and has a quick select in the notification tray to flip rotation on the fly.
I also use a stylus for certain things, but that's probably personal preference.
