Finally have a toad ordered!
  • That's a beautiful unit! I have Toad #017 and I love it, one of my most used portables.

  • The Palm Pre Is The Reason You Love Your Phone
  • Petition to bring back full qwerty portrait oriented keyboard sliders like this. I miss this hardware style.

  • How my early dev-kit Playdate was fixed
  • Wow, brave! The display on my batch 2 Playdate has started to develop an issue where certain pixels are displaying in a black line. It still plays for now, but I'm saving up my dollars to get it repaired/replaced since it's unfortunately outside the warranty period now.

  • HLT hits at the desk
  • HLT is still one of my most used. So simple but so good.

  • Vapor Brother VB1.5: Ball Vape Alternative
  • I didn't realize Vapor Brothers was still around, these are old school.

While I don't think I would actively recommend people over to something like VB today, it is cool that an original innovator in the vape space is still operating today.

  • Introducing: The Minimal Phone
  • I've been following this and am intrigued, but the combo of the high price, crowdfunding, and lack of even a functioning prototype to show off has me skeptical enough to not throw down money in advance for one.

If it actually comes out and they don't go bankrupt during the design/manufacturing process, and if the phone is actually good, then I'd definitely consider buying one. I like the concept a lot.

  • Put together a case for my firewood 6 and 9
  • Very nice! What case is that?

I personally use a small pocket sized pouch from Skunk bags to carry my FW7 and a few other small accessories when I need to.

  • How it all started
  • Was the first vape I had ever heard of/tried. Followed closely by the original Pax.

    How far we've come.

  • What's Your Favorite Vape?
  • My favorite desktop is definitely the Herborizer. I love the design of it, and love the hits that it produces. I have other vapes that are technically "more powerful", but for some reason the Herborizer just does it for me.

Portable wise, my favorite would be a close tie between the Tetra P80 and Morwood Toad. The P80 is the stronger performer between the two, but something about the Toad is so pleasant and enjoyable to use.

  • My new Omega wireless ball vape!
  • I've got the same green Grav mug, one of my favorites!

  • Etsy Seller Making Open Source Cart Extenders
  • Thanks for sharing! Cool to see what the community has come up with for the Pocket.

  • How do I use a dry herb vape properly?
  • We've got a dry herb vape specific community here on Lemmy as well. /C/Vaporents on Lemmy.world.

  • Denver commits $2M to the Basic Income Project
  • Payments ranged from $50-$1,000/mo.

  • Catalog Game Reviews
  • I picked up a lot of games on the sale, so here are some thoughts on a few:

Mars After Midnight: I'm still early on in this, but this is already one of my favorite games I've played on Playdate. The art is fun, music is catchy, and the gameplay is fun. At $6 this is a must-buy for any Playdate owner IMO, up there with Bloom.

Bloom: By far my favorite game on Playdate. This is a fantastic game from both a story and gameplay perspective. I've played it start to finish twice, and likely will play a third time as well.

Taxi Trouble: This is a fun high score style game. If you ever played Crazy Taxi or Road Rage, this is essentially a top-down take on that concept.

Steam'd Roller: I thought I'd really enjoy this from the catalog page, but it's only okay. The gameplay is very basic, and there isn't much challenge here for a high score based game. The first time I played I got a score of over 300 before I just gave up and let the timer run out, out of boredom.

Greed: This is a basic dice game, but endlessly replayable. I like that this lets you play against both a computer, or to pass the Playdate back and forth with a partner.

I bought a few others that I haven't gotten to spend much time with yet, but I'll post those thoughts here later!

  • What are some games that too few people have played?
  • Mutazione & Saltsea Chronicles are two favorites of mine, from the same developer, which don't seem to get much attention.

They're both narrative focused games, with a lot of world building and character development.

I enjoyed both of them greatly, and if you like chill story based games, I think you'd enjoy them!

  • How does pixelfed compare to instagram atm ?
  • Maybe I haven't spent enough time searching out accounts to follow, but I've found Pixelfed to be a bit lacking compared to Lemmy.

Lemmy successfully replaced Reddit for me. But Pixelfed is just too barren for me to be able to ditch Instagram.

    What's your LIS ranking?
  • What I find interesting about Life is Strange is that everyone has a bit of a different experience with the games depending on if the characters resonate with them, what they're personally going through in their life at that time, etc.

I do agree with you that it felt like LiS2 was attempting to be topical, which is where I felt like it fell flat for me.

Whereas the stories in the other games felt a bit more timeless and relatable for most players.

  • Die Gute Fabrik, Developer of Mutazione & Saltsea Chronicles, announces a halt in production due to funding issues.

Die Gute Fabrik shared this announcement on Twitter earlier today. Sadly, they are halting production of future products/games due to a lack of funding.

Mutazione & Saltsea Chronicles were both incredible games, and I was hopeful to see more from this studio. Here's to hoping that funding issues are resolved and they are able to resume production soon. It would be a shame to see such a promising studio go belly up.

You can now buy a Playdate console without a waiting period
  • It's an esoteric device for sure. I've really enjoyed the titles that the console ships with, and it actually has some relatively big names who have developed games for it. Crankin's Time Adventure was developed by the makers of Katamari Damacy. The upcoming Playdate game "Mars After Midnight" is being developed by Lucas Pope, of "Papers, Please" and "Return of the Obra Dinn".

The lo-fi aspect is part of the appeal, but obviously not for everyone. That being said, Panic has struggled to keep up with the overwhelming demand, and itch.io is filled with thousands of titles developed for the Playdate, and it has a very active online community surrounding the device (outside of Lemmy).

  • You can now buy a Playdate console without a waiting period
  • It's certainly an esoteric product. I bought mine before the price increase (when they were I believe $170), and I've been quite pleased with it. It's fun, has creatively made games on it, and makes for a perfect waiting room time-killing device. But it certainly isn't for everyone at its price point. The build quality is very nice though, as you'd expect from something designed by Teenage Engineering.

The Playdate console has been tough to get a hold of since being released, as pre-orders have vastly outnumbered current orders. However, Panic says you can order now and have it immediately shipped.

    What's your LIS ranking?

I've played all the LIS games and have been a fan of the series since the original released while I was in college.

For me, I think my ranking of the games is as followed:

    1. Before the Storm
    2. Life is Strange
    3. Life is Strange 3
    4. Life is Strange 2

Not including Captain Spirit because it's really more of a companion title and so short. It's a really close tie for me between the original LiS & LiS 3, as I really enjoyed both.

Before the storm was such a surprise for me and I really enjoyed the way they developed the characters & romance in that title, which makes it stand out for me.

Despite my love & enjoyment of the series, I really couldn't get into LiS 2. I played the whole game, but I struggled my way through it. I did not like the characters or the plot, and only finished it out of a hope that the ending would be worth it.

Has anyone else played Saltsea Chronicles yet?

After it being on my radar since release, I finally played Saltsea Chronicles.

I loved Mutazione, and was looking forward to trying out whatever else the developer put out, and despite not being immediately interested after the demo, I took the plunge and am so glad that I did.

Saltsea Chronicles carries so much of the same storytelling elements, world & character building, and a focus on community that Mutazione had, and goes deeper with it.

One of the things I found fascinating about Mutazione was this small community that had formed on the island, cut off from the rest of humanity. In the face of a radioactive disaster, they came together in community to support each other, and live with nature. It was an interesting look at what society could look like when cut off from outside pressure.

Saltsea takes this concept of disaster bringing together a community, and expands it into a more fleshed out world, with its own culture, practices, art. Your choices matter in terms of where the crew ultimately goes, and what islands you see. It's a game I could easily see myself replaying in order to visit all the places I didn't go to during my first play through.

If you loved Mutazione, I'd highly suggest trying out Saltsea for yourself. For those curious, it took me about ~14 hours to complete.

Have you played Saltsea? What did you think?

Root Bear - Fun new free game I just downloaded for Playdate. Would recommend!

I just downloaded this onto my Playdate last night, and ended up playing a good dozen rounds before bed.

This is a simple but fun high-score game. 60 seconds on the clock, do your best to use the crank to open the tap & poor these thirsty bears a mug of root beer to their exact fill line requirement. The better your pour, the more money you earn!

Give it a try and let me know your top score! I'm currently at $72.
