Cordrazine - 'Crazy' (Director's Cut)

I was reminded of this tune today. Cordrazine had a moment in Australia in the late 90s, with this song being reasonably prominent at an "alternative" level, even getting to #42 on the mainstream chart. The corresponding album reached #9.

The band was fronted by Hamish Cowan who had previously been in another indie band called Blindside with Cordrazine guitarist, Nick Batterham. I was socially acquainted with Hamish at the time, but don't know where he is now.

The Spinanes- KId In Candy

A while back, I posted a song from The Spinanes’ debut, 1993 album.

Kid In Candy is the lead track from their third and final album from 1998. I like it.

The Avalanches - Run DNA / Rock City (Live On Recovery)

The Avalanches full set on recovery Shout out to Consequence Of Sound for showing this video some love http://consequenceofsound.net/2016/07/album-review-the-avalanches-wildflower/

The Avalanches Live On Recovery (Run DNA / Rock City)

Many music fans will know of The Avalanches’ breakout, debut album Since I left You (2000). Fewer will know that they started out as more of a noise punk band, with elements of hip hop and electronic music nudging in. They were often compared to The Beastie Boys, which is probably why I started to notice them. The 2 tracks in this clip are from their EP El Producto (1998)

This live performance was on a Saturday morning TV show called Recovery, on ABC TV (Australia).

I was lucky enough to be at a show they played on New Year’s eve in 2000 1998, which was only a month after Since I left You was first released. It was so good.

If you get a chance, go check out this performance in the finals of the DMC World DJ Championship in ‘99. You might recognise the first record he plays, in particular. Dexta was in The Avalanches’ for a while.

Augustine

With this track, I am giving you the gift of one of my most favourite, melodic, 60s inspired, power pop songs. It's on a par with the best of the likes of Matthew Sweet IMO.

This band was from Perth, Western Australia as a vehicle for Dom Mariani, who also fronted the legendary Australian band, The Stems, in the 1980s. Mariani also produced songs as a duo with Daryl Mather (Lime Spiders) under the name of The Someloves, prior to forming DM3. All of the mentioned bands are worth looking up if the sound of "Augustine" is to your taste.

A quite epic live version of this track on the BBC. The whole of the Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space album, that was released in 1997, is epic in itself.

Custard - Music Is Crap (Official video)

This band has one of the the funnest of fun facts. Dave McCormack, their vocalist, is also the voice of Bluey's dad, Bandit.

How to describe Brisbane band, Custard? A bit Pavement, a bit Pulp (but less cool), a bit Ben Folds? You tell me. Anyway this track and some of their other stuff is worth a listen. Custard really is a terrible name for a band, though.

I vaguely remember seeing them play live in the 90s. One of my friends had started "festivities" a little bit early and fell asleep with his head resting on one of the stage monitors and pretty much missed the entire set.

This Is Serious Mum - TISM - Whatareya?

Here is the yewtu.be link to the video for the song

If you're not Australian and haven't heard of TISM before, then strap in, you're set for one hell of a ride.

Despite initial appearances, TISM could be considered astute social commentators on the superficial and sublime sides of the human condition. They were/are known for their hybrid of dance music and rock'n'roll, high-energy live shows and humorous lyrics. TISM's songs frequently satirised modern culture, celebrities and the entertainment industry, classic literature and art, current affairs, politics and sport.

A case can also be made for them being legends of the Australian alternative music scene and art rock in general, having been nominated 6 times for Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) awards, winning twice…thanks Wikipedia.

I could have picked their first single/anti-fascist protest song Defecate on my Face, their tribute to dead movie stars, (He'll Never Be An) Ol' Man River, the timeless sentiment of I Might Be a Cunt, but I'm Not a Fucking Cunt or the minor chart hit in Germany, Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me. However, I have chosen this chaotic TV aerobics themed music video for Whatareya? to share with you today.
