Rules:

Now that we have grown to over 400 people and it looks like this might take off we should start looking at what kind of forum we want this to turn into. We will obviously have the usual rules about harassment and inappropriate comments, but beyond that I think everyone should have a say.

A few questions to get people thinking:

  • How broad of a forum do we want? Do we want to allow topics that show house framing or projects made only on a laser cutter?
  • Do we lock posts that contain sensitive topics from comments like guns, religion, flags? If so what is the lock list?
  • Do we allow self promotion posts from individuals trying to sell their items? If so do we limit the number of posts they can make?
  • Do we allow posts from companies as long as they are labelled as such?
  • Should there be a process to remove a mod or the magazine owner if the community is not happy with them? What would that look like?
  • What other rules should we add or not add?

Walnut Floating Shelves
  • I have not made one but I’d be open to a commission if it was within my capabilities. I might need more to go off of than that one picture.

I don’t know if direct messages are a feature with kbin but you can also contact me through my Etsy store

  • Walnut Floating Shelves
  • Oh man. Mixing walnut and coffee stuff, two of my favorite things. Any chance you have ever made a v60 filter holder in the past? I tried to commission someone on Reddit but they never replied. Below is what I saw and NEEDED but could never get. Let me know if you would like take on a project!

  • Recipe Box - African Mahogany with Maple Accents
  • @Aesculapius beautiful!
OT, but love your username. I have a tattoo of the Rod of Aesculapius/Asclepius. Do you happen to know Panacea??

  • Raised dog bed with maloof joints.
  • @pinkraisons love your work. Really like thee flowing organic lines, clear inspiration with great execution and a personal twist.

  • What are some less-obvious items that you must have in your shop?
  • @Sausage good marking and layout tools. Not hand tool specific, but knowing that square is square (etc) is a prerequisite for a lot of precision work.

  • To be honest I’ve never used a leather strop. I discovered this site when I was learning to sharpen knives. The guy behind the site had access to an electron microscope and used it to test different methods. He found that a loose strip of denim (fixed on one end and held in the hand with the other) with stropping compound worked better than a leather strop. I think for straight razors he added a step after with either dry denim or diamond spray. I figured if it was good enough for this guy it’s good enough for me.

I can say the denim works better than stropping compound on a flat wood board.

  • Paul Sellers Style Winding Sticks
  • @ReclamationCrafts nice. I fell victim to the 'sth functional now' temptation and have been using lengths of aluminium angle ever since. One day...

  • @pinkraisons I just discovered the microblog section of this magazine. At least on kbin the microblog posts don’t seem to show up in the subscribed list. You might get more response if you start a thread with these questions.

I don’t have a lot of input on your questions but generally think a more permissive approach might be beneficial at first. If the magazine turns into a classified ad section or something like that then obviously things have gone too far. Woodworking is a pretty broad discipline though so it’s natural to have a variety of work posted here.

  • My first dovetail join
  • @pinkraisons and with a construction saw, no less!
I think you'll find hardwood with a joinery saw gratifyingly easy by comparison @r4venw.

  • It's Grillin' Season, so I made a Grillin' Table
  • @Simonbw That's an afternoon's work? I'm impressed. Most of my projects proceed at a pace normally described as 'geological'. If I get a good run on, glacial, perhaps.

    Nice work!

  • Regarding the future of Reddit and /r/woodworking
  • @pinkraisons agreed this won't kill Reddit per se, but it's a death knell.

As you point out, it's likely only the first in a series of revenue generation initiatives.

Why you would start with the one that alienates a lot of power users and mods is anyone's guess; I suppose it all comes down to ads.

Welp, I've used Reddit more than I care to admit for over a decade, and I'm gone now.

@majkeli it feels like young Reddit,or maybe that's the rose-tinted specs...

    @Magrath
Here's hoping! It's the niche/hobby subs that made R special. It'll take a while for the fragmented instances to conglomerate, if they ever do.
