This community has been up for 3 weeks, and it's a small and cozy place. I personally think it's fine if there isn't a lot of activity, these consoles are already "retro" after all. People can still write and if you're subscribed, you'll see it, so it's not like posts become invisible.
That said, would you prefer that we have some extra activity here to keep things lively? Such as weekly, bi-weekly or monthly discussions on some particular topic? Or something like a reading club, to check out a particular game? Or some other idea?
Next, should we have a megathread for collections and pickups? I personally think we should, as most communities/subs for specific older consoles tend to only have these kinds of posts, and I'm not a huge fan of that (maybe I'm just jealous).
Next next, should we have PS5-specific content here? I've not been deleting anything, but now that [email protected] is operational (and a few others), I don't see why not keep this community for "everything else" besides PS5.
Finally, I could use a backup mod or a few. Nothing bad is happening here, so there's no work for the time being (unless you want to be very active in posting etc.). My intent is to keep the community friendly but also allow a bit of rowdiness, as people can be passionate or have a bad day, so I don't like being too hasty with bans. Just gotta keep it civil in general. Either way, everyone is 100% nice here, so that's just theoretical.
Let me know if you'd like to be a mod. At this time I can only take users of lemmy.world to avoid bugs and incompatibilities that stem from federation. We can expand again later as things get smoother.
I like the idea of this community encompassing everything besides PS5 (I see that there are some more specific communities for PSX, PS2 etc - but splitting them up seems unnecessary at the moment, given the number of users).
Both the discussions and megathread are good suggestions!
I'm sorry to sound critical here but I struggle to see the purpose of this community if we have individual communities for all the different console. Seeing PS1 and PS5 posts next to each other seems odd as the person interested in the PS5 probably doesn't care or wasn't even alive yet during the PS1 era. I'm sure there are avid Playstation fans that own nearly all the systems but I would bet those people are a minority and could just as well subscribe to all those individual communities. So unless this community serves to be a firehose of information from the other communities or it focuses on non-console-specific posts (which would be hard to define and moderate for) then I'm not sure.
I've started this comm before people have made the specific ones (except PS5, and PS2 on kbin). And I don't think there's one for PS3 (except hacks), or Vita, or the PS App or other things.
Furthermore, some consoles are BC, games have gotten re-releases, franchises span multiple generations, and also a lot of people have multiple consoles. Especially these days. Need a steering wheel that would work for PS2 and PS4? Or someone to clean and repair multiple consoles? Ask about a PS3 game that has a sequel on PS4 or a spinoff on Vita? There you go.
PS5 is a specific case, which is why I'm asking whether to have that content here (and PS4 games will probably be debated in PS5 sub anyway).
At the start of a forum or network it's better to have a more generalized place, and specific niches may break off later once there's enough people to sustain those comms. And if there won't be, people can keep hanging around here.
Btw I'm linking to all the other PS comms in the sidebar, so it's not like I'm holding anyone here.
I pretty much agree with all of your suggestions! I would love to have weekly threads that are a "reading club". I would participate as long as I can get my hands on the game in question.
I don't mind PS5 content appearing sometimes. I guess if it became a problem we could revisit it. I think most PS5 discussion will naturally migrate to the lemmy.ml sub, but I think right now any and all PS content is good.
