I know this is meant to send a message, but I think it would be more hurtful to Tesla to leave those cars to rot on the lot. This way they're getting paid by insurance for all those cars.
If the goal is deterring purchase, then it would actually be most impactful to vandalize teslas that have already been bought. Torching them in a dealership has people going âit sucks to be that dealership.â After all, they didnât torch any cars that had already been bought, so what is the harm in buying one? If people are only targeting dealerships, youâll be safe.
Spray painting swastikas on them on the street has people second-guessing whether or not they want to own one personally, because they donât want to be targeted. Basically, a dealership isnât personal enough to deter personal ownership. A dealership says âweâre targeting the corporations,â whereas vandalizing individual cars says âweâre targeting every Tesla.â You need something that sends a strong âyou could feasibly be next if you buy oneâ message.
Iâm not even saying youâd need to torch them. Youâd just need to vandalize them to the point that the owners donât want to drive them anymore. Itâs a pain in the ass to clean, but spray paint can be cleaned off. And also, it doesnât disable or destroy the car. So youâre not depriving the owner of its use in the long term (except for the psychological âit could happen againâ side of things). But itâs enough of a pain in the ass that most people wonât even want to risk owning one in the first place.
I guess I don't see how attacking the property of a hard working individual, who's political stance you don't even know, would be beneficial to making Musk feel some pain. Hate on Tesla all you want. Clearly the world feels the same, based on their poor sales. That's where the real damage will come from. I just don't think we should be attacking the properties of individuals.

Burning Teslas in the dealership lot is short term pain, quickly recouped by insurance claims. Making people afraid to buy Teslas at all has the potential to kill the entire company in the long term. And thatâs not something that can be recouped by an insurance claim or a corporate reorganization effort.
