The Christian right has become an increasingly powerful force in American politics at every level, from school boards to the presidency. Its roots trace back decades.
Chris Hedges often writes about this. For instance: American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America. I don’t think Hedges really believes in a sky daddy, but he has deep ties to progressive mainline Protestantism, which gives him something of an inside view. (He’s also an inveterate liberal, so his works falter when it comes to class analysis. He’ll tell you almost everything that is wrong with capitalism at length, yet still suffers from capitalist realism.)
I cannot understand why followers of the Servant King should lust for power. They have left the Way, disowned the Truth and replaced their Life with idols.
