So apparently I need to select main from under the sidebar before going to menu and create post to get it to select a community to post to….

Odd, I don't need to do that. I can just hit create from anywhere. I'm subscribed to multiple communities though. If you subscribe to something else, does that help? You can find more communities by going to the communities link, and then changing the radio button to "all". Then it will show you all the communities anyone here subscribes too, even if they're on a different server.
