In my opinion, every government, public entity, association, foundation, etc., that needs to communicate with the public should have its own communication channel, with full control over its data and the messages it delivers. When I read “my Discord server,” I feel like responding “there’s nothing ‘yours’ about it - tomorrow morning they could shut everything down, and you would have lost EVERYTHING.”. Own your data!
Sometimes, I read that instances are not opened because of “costs not balanced by the number of users.” But even public television channels are often economically unprofitable, yet they are considered an essential service for public communication. Open, decentralized technologies that ensure control over one’s data should be treated the same way.
@[email protected] (always upset when I see the number of official accounts on X, be it from gouv or people I follow, and who I consider as good persons. Why use shitty social media to communicate?). Ok : number of potential followers, and the historic media almost always relaying infos from X, never from mastodon or other fediverse components. We just don’t exist for the general public. Are we a cult or something? Yep we must be Freemasons or Illuminati of some kind, that’s the only way to explain this…
@[email protected] as it's been for the Swiss government, they just look at the "numbers" or "engagement". And we're not so many, comparing to X or other platforms.
Still, I think a public entity (or similar) shouldn't look at the numbers but at the service and its peculiarities.
@[email protected] sure, as it was the case with energy providers, postal service, health services and so on. For some unknown reason (💰💰💰) and civilizational changes (“I, I, and I”), it seems like the focus is placed on other buzzword themes. (AI Ai Ai Ai Ai AI).
People, give back the human intelligence ™️®️a central part in our societies
2024 and people are coming up with the idea of websites again...
Like. That's how the I termer used to work, if you wanted to know about some group. You went to their website, you didn't try to find a social media account they have
But even public television channels are often economically unprofitable,
You're surprised non profits don't make profits?
And why do all these simultaneously obvious but also strangely ignorant posts all coming from people who use their real names on social media?
@[email protected] I believe there has been a misunderstanding: no one is saying we should go back to websites, but rather to open social platforms where users can have control over their own data, which is exactly what the Fediverse is about. And this is precisely why I say that, even if an instance doesn't generate enough engagement (see what happened with the official Swiss instance, which was shut down on 30 September), this communication channel should still be maintained.
So I think we are on the same wavelength...
I can highly recommend to migrate away from discord uaing https://keet.io today or at least to mirror all discord communication using bots to something like https://cabal.chat 🙂
