Peter Karol, faculty director of the Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property at the University of New Hampshire, joins Radio Boston to discuss the case against Milton over noncompliance with the MBTA Communities Act.
Housing prices and unit availability won’t do anything as long as we have automated price fixing software running rampant on our real estate market. Literally the cheapest place I found when I recently searched was $2,000/ month for a 2 bedroom shithole. The student loan crisis was a HUGE contributor to the runaway rental rates in Boston and the surrounding areas. As long as the student loan crisis continues, rents will only go up.
Towns reap the benefits of higher real estate values, and therefore higher taxes, for properties within a stone's throw of a subway line. Now Milton is being told to make that benefit accessible and they're up in arms. It's not right.
Also, wealthier communities don't feel the sting from pulled grant funding like other towns might. Sorry to the pearl-clutching Miltonians but everyone needs to do their part and being scared of affordable housing isn't an excuse.
