Is it voluntary though? I regularly provide care for someone with Advanced dementia and this method of speaking is very familiar. Very often they'll just go on random tangents that make no sense. Like mid-sentence. So I'm not sure he's switching topics because he doesn't want to go into an issue as much as that's just how his decrepit brain works.
