The judge overseeing the criminal trial of Donald J. Trump said he would be willing to jail the former president if he continued to violate his gag order. A banker who set up the account used to make a hush-money payment to Stormy Daniels is back on the stand.
Is that a typical amount for anyone who might do similar? It sure doesn't seem like a lot, especially for someone that is known to push law boundaries. The point: he shouldn't be fined because he's Trump or because of the high profile case, but he should be punished sufficiently for the blatant disregard for the law, as should anyone else.
The judge is being very careful to not give even the impression that he's not treating Trump fairly so that Trump has little to nothing to appeal.
He did warn Trump that further violations would result in jail time. I'll believe that when I see it, but it's not like the judge could go straight to imprisonment.
While violations of the gag order can be punishable by up to 30 days in prison under New York state law, prosecutors only asked Merchan to fine Trump $1,000 per violation for now—the maximum fine allowed under state law—though they also suggested the judge warn future violations could be met with imprisonment
Basically total bullshit. He should be locked up for how much he's done it. Anyone else would be.
