A. Collier, Astrophysics Ph.D. talks about the current culture surrounding postdoctoral positions. And how unsustainable they are. I love her channel π
This morning I was just wondering how the 'rona affected everyone in Academia. I'd love to hear people anecedotes about their department or institution before and during the pandemic.
The equivalent financial analysis in the Netherlands is not nearly as extreme as what she quotes for the US, where earning double the postdoc salary appears to be a realistic expectation. Here, jumping going from a PhD into industry gives you closer to a 10% - 20% pay rise relative to jumping into a PostDoc, at least for science researchers.
So, a PostDoc might be more a more attractive choice here than in the US. But I personally want to see what research is like outside of academia, the modest pay rise and stability are attractive, and the research projects seem comparably interesting. Ask me in a few years how it goes...
Also, thanks for bringing this channel to my attention. I have watched a few of her videos since yesterday, and I like her presentation style and choice of topics.
