For anyone not aware of intricacies of the Manhattan Project, this is a reference to the Demon Core. Workers accidentally caused this core to release massive amounts of radiation twice, both times resulting in deaths.
What you have to understand is just how much fun it is to edge a supercritical mass of plutonium with a screwdriver
