Possibly Stamets could muddle his way through, but I couldn't resist that expression.
Culber would know from the beginning that Stamets would fail and give up, but be encouraging and supportive none-the-less. Then when it happened he would act shocked and just say, “It’s okay, babe, you did your best.”
