Metal shop dudes, please help: Metal properties for M9 (9mm) custom length axle custom order
My 2011 Specialized Rockhopper 29er has 9mm QR axles (135mm and 100mm lengths).
I'm going to replace them with solid all-thread (or only mostly all-thread?) if it's not expensive. If metal shops want to charge $200 for a custom set of basic axles, I'll opt out.
I want to know what metal properties need to be requested for axles beyond my current knowledge.
I plan to mount onto the axles, an axle-mount rack adapter (Old Man Mountain's Divide rack dropout extension), so the axles will need to be 215mm long at back and 180mm long in front. If the axles are too labor inten$ive for a shop, I'll mount the OMM Divide rack dropout extensions — or else the Tubus rack foot extensions — to the wheel dropout bracket with a longer M8 bolt among the two bolts that's fastening the wheel dropout bracket to the frame.
I'm working between a Salsa Wanderlust HD rack and a Tubus Logo Classic rack; both steel. I plan to continue to exceed rack load weight tolerance recommendations on occasional grocery runs to carry 85lbs of water in two 5-gallon jugs in rear panniers, so I might as well order very hard and durable axles while I'm at it so those aren't ever a variable.
I'm submitting order inquiries to metal shops. They want specs I couldn't know regarding the properties. I'm saying I want "high strength" carbon steel, heat treated, and chamferred all-thread 9mmx1.0".
I'm being asked if it should be "DIN976 (obs DIN975)," "CL8," "mill finish with no plating". Any insight there?
And I still need to figure out the pitch without taking my hubs apart, if possible. It's probably 1.0 or 1.25. I'm hoping 1.0, right, cause that's a tighter, more secure thread pitch, yeah? I wonder if I can just expect P1.0 and expect to order after-market cones and axle nuts and washers for m9x1.0 if I'm wrong.
Maybe Specialized rider care will email back with the pitch someday soon.
I slso wonder if the bearing cups have an inner diameter wider than the 9mm axle perhaps past 10mm to possibly accept a sneaky 10mm axle. The whell dropouts are just barely wider than 10mm, so maybe it's possible to upgrade to 10mm?
For those who know axle properties, metal industry lingo, and any relevant Specialized manufacturing specs, please chime in.
Thank you.
Sidenote: Unless bike corporations have a gun to the head of any metal manufacturers who dare to mass produce 9mm axles in any attempt to short the custom axle market, it seems 9mm threaded rod is a Bermuda Triangle of fear. Same with black security Torx bolts. Must be superstitious vodoo physics or something?
P.S. Please don't suggest Grainger or McMaster-Carr. All of America seems to be anti-M9, especially as all-thread.

Rear suspension troubles
Hey all, do we have any suspension nerds here?
I have some annoying troubles with the rear suspension on my 2017 Focus Vice trail bike. The shock is Rockshox deluxe select R with max tokens inside and 250psi air pressure (~20% sag)
Long story short, I keep bottoming out the rear suspension regularly on jumps and drops way easier than I'm comfortable with, but with the amount of pressure in the shock the ride starts feeling pretty harsh as well
So what I've thought as options, but might need some more validation:
- bigger bike and/or bike with more progressive suspension curve
Eh, don't really want to replace bike I otherwise love
- different shock?
Not sure what I would look there tbh, also gets pricy but not as bad as a whole new bike
- messing with the shock tune
The shock doesn't have externally adjustable high/low speed compression, but perhaps could adjust the shim stack? This is completely alien stuff for me so some ideas/advice would be appreciated
- there's a megneg air can upgrade kit available for the shock
This increases the negative volume giving more mid-strike support, plushier initial feeling and more bottom out force using less tokens as claimed by rockshox. This upgrade kit is not terribly expensive, but is it worth if I'd better be going with a new shock anyways?

I finally have a retro MTB again
After I had to abandon my Giant because of frame issues, I got this sweet 1999 Bergamont Virus with a steel frame and a Rockshox Jett fork. Put some parts on it to match the frame colors as well as Schwalbe Billy Bonkers. It's currently being used as my commuter/city bike and it's zipping through the streets quicker than my modern 29er XC. Love this thing.

12 speed advice needed
So, it's about time to replace this derailleur, it's served me well but honestly the problems never really stopped with GX eagle.
I just don't know which route to take, since I run a helix cassette I could possibly jump to Shimano deoreXT for about $130 while keeping the SRAM chain. It should be compatible, but concrete information is sparce when mixing so many brands.
Even less information is available about the other option, LTWOO TX. Apparently for $50 shipped I can get a 12 speed shifter and derailleur. Every bike shop guy will tell you to steer clear of LTWOO but the stuff I've seen in person felt good quality. I can't find any food reviews on the TX group and even aliexpress shows maybe a dozen orders between multiple vendors. Really my biggest gripe with them is that spare parts seem to be impossible to find, everything seems to be disposable instead of rebuildable.
As far as I can tell there's no ultra reliable mechanical 12speed. Shimano is probably the best I can afford, but the mismatched parts are likely to lead to issues. LTWOO would save me enough to upgrade my brakes but I have no idea if it's just going to be a pain in the ass or actually usable. Honestly I really don't want to buy another eagle derailleur. From day 1 I've had nonstop issues, yet it's the option that makes the most sense to me.
If anyone has real experience with 12 speed outside of the usual setups your knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the ramble.
TLDR:
- Just replace the derailleur ($100)
- Upgrade to Shimano ($130)
- (Maybe) downgrade To LTWOO ($50)

I rebuilt a Specialized Stumpjumper.
Went for a test ride today on a Specialized Stumpjumper I recently rebuilt. I increased the tire size from 27.5 to 29. Bike rides really nice.

Bird Zero AM - Post winter make over.
Following on from my post a little while back over the winter I stripped down my Bird bike to paint it up a fresh. These are the results!
Things I've changed-
New XT BB
Nukeproof Headset
DMR Defy stem
DMR wingbars
DMR Death Grips
Raceface Chester Pedals
No brand bash guard / chain device
Vittoria Mazza rear tyre
Everything else I've just cleaned up and refurbed as best I can. I also decided to colour code the brake levers whilst I was at it and they came out pretty well considering i had to "mask" the mechanism where it wouldn't disassemble any further with blue tack xD

3 Crosses Hill, Medellin, Colombia
I hope everyone had a great riding weekend. This was my riding spot today. It’s got a bunch of nice technical bits and jumps and wallrides.
And the best part is it’s above Medellin so you get this view of the city the whole ride down.

Noob Question. Under what riding/trail conditions would I want to adjust my suspension?
My suspension has Pedal Lock Out and Low SPD. When would I want to have pedal lock out and what's the advantage of the Low Spd settings?
I just upgraded from an entry level hardtail to a used carbon fiber XC bike I picked up for a steal. All the components are much nicer than what I had before. My goal now is to get fast on flowy trails. I'm not a gear head and mostly just want to have fun while exercising.

What is the square bracket just under the pivot next to the rear shock for??
I thought it was an access hole to get to the cables inside the seat tube, but when I unscrewed the square black plastic plate, it's just a flat bare metal surface, with a vertical slot cut in offset from the centre.
Is this for a chain guide?? Seems too high for that. I can't find anything in the user manuals on Giant Trance (this is a 2018 Trance 2).

Tips on where to buy frames?
I'm wanting to build a bike to my own specs, I thought I would be able to get a bit of a discount by buying the frame as second hand, but it's proving oddly difficult to find any.
I tried Ebay thinking that would be the one, but it's just loaded with Chinese brand frames.
Do I have to buy a new frame from the manufacturer?

How often do you disassemble your frame to clean moving parts?
Since wiping the dirt off of frame joints/bolts seems to push dirt around, how often do you unscrew the frame bolts and regrease the exterior of the bearing and deep clean? I'm not talking about opening the bearings themselves.

Too overgrown for singletrack, switching to dirt roads
Late summer means the local singletrack is hopelessly overgrown. I had to stick to access roads and old doubletrack. It was still a beautiful day to be out, though!

On One "The Gimp" - What I was riding back in 2006
What were you guys riding back in the day? This was the final form of my bike back when I was a teenager.
One One Gimp frame
FSA pig three piece cranks
Single speed conversion
24inch Atomlab rear wheel with DMR moto
26inch Atomlab front with DMR moto digger
Manitou forks
DMR wing bars and zip grips
DMR V8 pedals
I was chasing that slack head angle before it was cool apparently, not that I knew that was even a thing back then :D
My brakes were always my feet and I only recently got a saddle in these pictures as I rode without a saddle for around 4 years prior to this.
I wish I still had this bike but sadly it moved on a long time ago now.

Bird Zero AM - Before a winter make over.
Getting in as many rides as I can before it gets really shitty over the winter. Once it gets too wet it is gonna get a full strip down, service or replace everything and give it a fresh look via paint!

Is there a name for that maneuver where on a sharp corner you go on your front wheel and swing your rear over?
I see lots of videos where people do this on switchbacks and such. I'm working on some skills and have tried doing this on grass and haven't been very sucessful...
Hoping to do some research on tips if I figure out what it's called

Cheap Upgrades
I'm relatively new to MTB. I bought an REI Co-op DRT 1.1 hardtail about 2 years ago. It's decent but I ride with guys who have full-suspension Santa Cruz or Cannondale bikes and they can manage to get up more tricky terrain. I find myself walking my bike more than I'd like.
I've seen some 6 or 7 year old seemingly better bikes on FB marketplace for $600-800 like a Ghost Kato FS 7
Is that decent upgrade from a hardtail while on a budget? What's the best options for upgrades under $1000?
It's mostly rocky hilly terrain and some gravel narrow tracks in central Texas.

What are your thoughts on clipless?
My trusty flat Five Tens are at the end of their life and I'm in need of new shoes. I ride SPD with my gravel bike and think my current clipless shoes for that are amazing.
That gets me to think maybe I should just ditch my flat pedals on mtb and get clipless. But I'm a little hesitant because of added risk of falling.
If you ride clipless on mtb or especially if you ride it both gravel and mtb, do you have any tips or thoughts to share?

Been a great bike, but now it’s time for an upgrade
After 50 pounds, 2k miles, and a countless smiles it’s time to upgrade from my Orbea Occam.
It’s been great but looking forward to what’s in the mail!
Anyone else looking forward to an upgrade?
