Stubsack: weekly thread for sneers not worth an entire post, week ending 24th November 2024
  • With a touch of, and maybe I'm being mean, "this particular bad thing shouldn't happen to someone like me! it must be that no one else tried hard enough to fix it till now"

I thought it was particularly telling that he says someone else in the "metabolic health" world warned him not to be mean about RFK. Take that as a sign that you're in kooksville!

  • Please sneer at this article. I thought it was pissweak myself.

Edit: "Hear me out: RFK Jr could be a transformational health secretary"

Will a Republican-controlled Congress allow for more government regulation – even if it saves lives?

    No. Next question.

  • We're going to be answering two essay questions in an in-class test instead of writing a paper this year specifically to prevent chat gpt abuse. Which he laughed and joked about because he really believes chat gpt can produce good results !

  • JD Vance outs himself as an SSCer, SSCers react
  • I happened to be at mass today. There was a little explanation in the missalette that not only did Jesus's death redeem the sins of everyone today, he also redeemed all the sinners who lived and died before Christ came. I dunno, it reminded me of the Roko's Basilisk eternal judgment computer simulation....

  • Questions To Which the Answer is No, an ongoing series:

Generative AI - Can it actually help with the day-to-day technical work of a practising engineer?

The upcoming Autumn Panel Discussion hosted by the UCD Engineering Graduates Association (EGA) will take place on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at ESB's Headquarters. This event will explore several pressing topics at the intersection of engineering and artificial intelligence. Attendees will gain insights into current trends in AI, particularly the latest advancements in generative AI tools and platforms. The discussion will feature case studies that highlight the successful integration of AI into real-world engineering processes, offering practical examples of its applications. Additionally, the panel will address the essential skills that engineers need to effectively incorporate AI into their workflows, providing guidance on upskilling for the future. The event will conclude with a Q&A session, allowing participants to engage directly with the panelists and delve deeper into the ethical considerations surrounding AI in engineering.

No, not software engineers, engineer engineers. Yikes!

  • The Martians seem to think that Mars will be like a new colony, with all the "hope" that implies, but it seems to me that colonization was a wretched process for many of the colonists (to say nothing of the people being colonized). Musk is only cheerful about it because he thinks he'll be whipping the slaves rather than working the arid red soil.

  • Data centre energy usage has outpaced growth of renewable energy in Ireland

m.independent.ie Wind and solar energy produced more electricity last year, but data centre usage outpaced progress

All the extra renewable electricity produced in Ireland last year was eaten up by the growth in data centres, new analysis shows.

Wind and solar energy produced more electricity last year, but data centre usage outpaced progress

"Total demand for electricity last year grew by 4.4pc, or 1.3 terawatts (TW), but 80pc of that increase, or 1.1TW, was from data centre growth."

Training data for LLMs = higher energy prices and environmental degradation.

Dan McQuillan on Resisting AI | Yeah Nah Pasaran! On 3CR

www.3cr.org.au Dan McQuillan on Resisting AI

This week we have a chat with Dr Dan McQuillan about his book Resisting AI: An Anti-fascist Approach to Artificial Intelligence.

    Dan McQuillan on Resisting AI

Interview on Australian anti-fascist radio show Yeah Nah Pasaran! with Dan McQuillan, computer lecturer and author of "Resisting AI: An Anti-fascist Approach To Artificial Intelligence". Interesting comments on AI as a tool of/for austerity politics, and an argument that AI is inherently anti-worker. Probably nothing new to people in here, but eloquently stated and put into a wider political context.

Building an entirely new city from scratch in Northern California: an environmentally friendly way of providing more housing, according to some silicon valley types

Plan for 55,000-acre utopia dreamed by Silicon Valley elites unveiled

Sure, why attempt to improve the climate resilience or affordable housing in the cities where millions of people already live, when you can just buy land upstate and get a whole new toy to play with? And why tell local, state or national government anything - they'll only be supplying the land, water, sewerage, utilities & transport links. You pay your taxes, you deserve to get something back.

This is going to be one hell of a planning application. What's the land use code for "feudal stronghold"?
