That show did prime the superstructure of the world to be ready for the wired and real world to be entertwined as much as they are now.
I do think that the show is kind of reactionary, as most japanese media is. In the middle it did show the wonders of liberating human imagination within the wired network, only for it to be crushed and controlled by the big governments and corporations.
