Today I woke up to a very angry user who was the sole moderator of two communities here (c/gold and c/alchemy) who had reported a few posts and sent some PM's to a mod. (See screenshot, read from bottom to top)
Honestly, it hit us hard. Why would a user be so agressive against us? If they didn't want to see NSFW content they can hide in their profile, and unless we're mistaken it's hidden by default?
The mod team (currently just /u/reddthat and I) had a chat and thought about it. If a user PM'd any user with this type of abusive language we would immediately reprimand them. This is what we did.
So? I hear you say. Why are bothering to make this announcement?
This user clearly was under the wrong assumption about this instance, didn't know how to hide NSFW content, or has something against anime?
The question we want to ask our community are:
What would you have done in this situation?
What could we do to ensure no other users get the wrong idea?
We would like to get to know you all, work with you, and make it a place where everyone is welcome. We want to share memes that make us laugh, share images that excite us and find communities that make us feel at home. This user clearly did not understand that.
If I don't like something, generally, I'll just unsubscribe/block/whatever works to make it not show up. On the Fediverse, that usually works - it's not like Zuckville where you say "I don't want to see this" and the platform replies "Great! Let's jam 1000x more of it down your throat" ... that's the situation where I'll remove myself from the platform.
Having said that, I have a few suggestions:
If you make the 'subscribed' view the default view rather than 'local', that helps if you get someone who really doesn't like something in your local feed but still wants to use your instance. Personally, I use 'subscribed' mostly anyway now I've gone to the trouble of subscribing to a bunch of stuff I want to read.
With that anime porn... not my cup of tea and I don't generally look at them, but I'm not a prude and honestly I don't see the harm in anyone looking at what are essentially raunchy cartoon characters. But for your own safety and peace of mind, make sure you're well within the law, otherwise the Feds could come knocking - and no amount of anime is worth going to jail for :) Just saying.
🤣 Gave me a good chuckle when I needed it.
Changing the default when a user joins would be detrimental to the initial user, as they would instantly see no content and I'm not sure how guests would see the instance in that case as well.
As currently, there is no way to preemptively subscribe users to certain communities. Maybe something for the Lemmy dev's to look into. But I think they are trying to fix the bottlenecks in the database server at the moment.
Thanks for the good ideas regardless and I'm glad you are here!

Ehh, as long as I can easily block the content I don't want to see (and I can here!), I really don't care. I'm not a fan of anime porn, other users are not fans of gardening, yet other ones may like anime porn and gardening but hate politics... It's physically impossible to cater to everyone, so to be completely honest I would just not care, delete that user and move on.
I guess it wouldn't hurt, so maybe if it's not too much effort? I was able to figure it out myself and I'm a moron, but some less tech savvy users might appreciate a bit more help ;)
My takehome from this is that there's a gap in the market for political anime gardening porn. I'm thinking cute Japanese girls debating fiscal policy while weeding the lawn in the nude?
Based on the writing from the user, it looks like they want to attack someone over being offended instead of making a request to have a way to not see something.
You will never be able to make everyone happy, and you should never have to be a punching bag for something you are offering for free.
If they don't want to see NSFW, most Lemmy instances block it from what I saw when trying to pick a server. There are also options to block from their own feeds if they care so much about it.
I am here specifically because I am looking for a server that does not block content unless it is spam, malicious (virus or phishing), or CSAM.
If I wanted an echo chamber to only see things that I agree with and make me feel good, there are other places for that.
At the end of the day, us users are responsible for finding a server that has rules that we agree with, that is the while point of having a federated platform. If I can't find one I like, I can roll my own.
If a user cannot speak like an adult and convense you to change your mind... They should go kick rocks.
Unfortunately, words hurt more than physical items can.
separating your admin and personal
I have and I won't be telling you which one is my "personal" one :D.
It unfortunately does not stop users from PM'ing admins, mods, or other users about issues they might have. Thank you for the kind words, and the ideas regardless.
This whole thing is shitty, but I think it would be best to ignore that stuff and not take petty hate-mail to the public sphere. If they want to do that, the communities are free to respond. But for private messages…just ignore the assholes.
Yeah he sounds like a toxic person. It’s one thing to say that you’re not into that content and ask how to hide it, it’s another to go off the rails and throw personal attacks at you. Don’t let it bother you.
I'll preface all this by saying that the person who left the messages in the image on this post was out of line. Nobody should treat anybody else like that.
That said, I do think there's something we could learn from this situation.
I just joined and when I arrive the rules were already posted and very clear IMO.
Not having the context of the rules, I could see how someone might be surprised by the behavior of this site if they were expecting it to work the same way reddit does. I could be wrong, but I believe the way reddit works is that while it has NSFW content, that content doesn't show up in the main feed. If I understand how reddthat works, The user has to choose whether or not to see NSFW in the main feed.
When I signed up for my account, it was not clear to me whether that NSFW checkbox does. If it is unchecked, is all NSFW content hidden from me no matter how I try to access it, or is it just not added to the main feed that I see. Honestly, I still don't really know what the checkbox does.
I think the mods and admins are doing a fantastic job here. Thanks for setting up the site and for the transparency. It's fantastic.
Thank you for describing your experience, it is invaluable to us.
The NSFW checkbox is an On/Off. You either see nsfe content or don't, that includes nsfw communities. It also is hard coded to blur the thumbnails and require you to click it to unblur. There are some definite rough edges currently which are known by the Lemmy devs but the priority seems to be fixing scaling issues currently, as the biggest instances are struggling hard!
There is little modification we can do without doing development work on Lemmy itself to even have descriptions of what the items do. (there are even options in the back end that i have no idea what they do!).
I just joined this instance, and thought the NSFW check box was pretty obvious. The instance description is pretty clear too. This guy is way out of pocket taking such an aggressive tone.
That being said, if you have nsfw settings front and center in your instance description and signups, this instance is probably going to turn primarily into porn submissions, anime or otherwise.
Thanks for you invaluable feedback and thoughts.
Yeah, we do not want it to turn into only NSFW content but we are certainly not against it. Being a general instance with a focus on community is where we would like to get to rather than another faceless link aggravate.
Cheers, Tiff
Always a big fan of putting the important details on the label as clearly as possible. If you allow NSFW content let people know. If you don't, let people know.
I find I can't get mad at the users for thier choices until Ive made it almost impossible to have blindly made those choices without knowing. Once we are at that point, I just keep the banhammer ready.
A very good point. Upon sleeping and resting for a period of time, I'm feeling better and believe there was a clear issue with our Rules (when that user joined, there wasn't any!) and it seems they were not a good fit for our community.
Thank you for the idea about the rules, and having the "important details on the label". I have since pinned the Reddthat Rules to our instance for the time being while we get a tremendous amounts of signups.
Yup it'd be a block and move on from me. Some people just have to have something to complain about - you could tie yourself in knots trying to make this jackass happy and they'd still find something to moan over.
Your content is all legal, NSFW stuff is tagged and it's easy to opt out. It's even easier just to scroll past stuff you're not interested in.
This guy seems like a nutcase, and I would just block him and move on. Assholes are gonna asshole. Don't sweat it and don't think you're in the wrong in any way.
