For example, with The Good Place, I was expecting a basic sitcom where characters like Eleanor and Jason learn to be better people while they go through weird afterlife hijinks.

Instead, it's about How Michael deliberately constructed things in an attempt to get the four main characters to torture each other. So later I thought the show would be about them Eleanor and the gang learning to outsmart Michael and escape to the real Good Place only for them to do a montage of her figuring it out every single time through 800 different simulations and it just spiraled from there.
