Door ringing at night

Sorry if the title sounds too spooky. For 5 nights, older men are ringing the door bell around 12-1am. My housemates and I live with my 2 dogs in an apartment complex.

After the last interaction we got one of the ringers to answer two questions. He confirmed our house number and then the ringer asked if we’re alone (at that time only one housemate was talking) and we asked why but got ignored. When further asked why is he ringing the ringer said he’s the police and left.

We are a bit scared and don’t know what to do. Do you have any idea what is going on?
