A recap of opposition encountered by the DRS GME effort on Reddit
-Reddit is the centralized social media platform that investors of GameStop have been using to discuss information relevant to their investment. The primary location where these investors communicate is on the Superstonk subreddit.
-Fidelity, a major financial services company, is a significant investor / owner of Reddit and has some amount of influence into Reddit.
-The consensus of the community of GameStop investors is that DRSing their shares of GME is the best available tool to protect their investment and to expose the fraudulent and criminal behavior (naked short selling) that has been perpetrated against their company.
-Fidelity has demonstrated its awareness of and contempt for the DRS GME movement when it posted Meme Stock Guy.
-Evidence exists that at least 1 current mod of Superstonk was a former employee of Fidelity. It stands to reason that there could be other connections between the Superstonk mod team and Fidelity.
-There is a small but devoted team of individuals that have escalated their efforts, who have, among other things, produced the websites DRSGME.org and WhyDRS.org, and fostered a community of like-minded individuals that also want to contribute to this effort of educating other GameStop investors and the larger public in the pursuit of revealing what they believe to be the most important actions that investors can take to ensure the success of their investment and to protect their investment against ongoing financial crime.
-The mods of Superstonk have demonstrated through their actions, suspiciously, from the very early stages of the effort until present, antagonistic and vindictive behavior against the DRSGME.org team and those that support the effort.
-The mods of Superstonk have demonstrated in various situations their propensity to censor particular topics of conversation without providing appropriate justification.
-The mods of Superstonk publicly accosted and chastised the efforts of the DRSGME.org team for discussing information that was appropriately obtained directly from GameStop.
-Shortly afterwards, Reddit banned the r/DRSyourGME subreddit
Moving forward - away from centralized platforms and in to the Fediverse
It is clear that Reddit, which is influenced to some degree by Fidelity, a financial services company with contempt for the DRS GME movement, has no desire to do any favors for this movement.
Reddit possesses the centralized authority to control the types of information and communities that are permitted to exist on the platform, and it is clear that important conversations about DRS GME are not welcome there.
Superstonk is a large subreddit that is permitted to continue to exist but Superstonk is a place where information is controlled and particular information is highly censored. It is this particular information that the DRS GME effort requires to discuss in order for investors of GameStop to achieve success in their investment.
Since Reddit can not be relied upon going forward as the place to share crucial information in our interests, it is therefore imperative to foster and grow the community using alternative platforms.
One might argue that we could use Twitter or Facebook or Discord in various capacities, but, among other reasons why they are not ideal, these platforms each suffer from the same problem that Reddit has: they are for-profit entities that exist to serve the interests of the investor owners. It can be expected that any significant presence on any of these centralized platforms will eventually be met with the same types of resistance and containment that has been encountered on Reddit.
Therefore we must act accordingly. Although we can continue to use those centralized platforms in various capacities, we must have a space of our own where the real nitty gritty details surrounding DRS GME can be openly discussed without being concerned about being censored or deplatformed for it. We can not depend on any for-profit social media platform to have any concerns or grant any fairness towards our interests.
This is where the fediverse clearly demonstrates its value to this movement. The fediverse is simply a network composed of open-source software that enables us to be our own social media providers without relying on any for-profit social media companies.
It may currently be small, and may initially be unappealing to many, but the fundamental provision of putting the authority of the community into the hands of the community is what makes it the necessary tool for our future success. Despite any legitimate shortcomings that fediverse apps may have, it provides the necessary freedom to discuss topics of conversation that would otherwise be censored for being against the interest of for-profit social media companies that are influenced by big-moneyed-interests.
TLDR: The Fediverse is a tool that gives us the power to speak freely about crucially important information relevant to the interests of our investment that would be censored elsewhere. As time goes on, this value of this tool will only become more self-evident.
