Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen is a wonderful game to sit down and immerse yourself in.
I've been going at it the past few days, and it's surprising to me how this game embodies a lot of staples of FromSoft's games. Exploration is fairly unguided, apart from your pawns chiming in. Weapons and Gear are just as important as knowing when to fight or flee. Along with that comes the unapologetic difficulty. Fuck around and find out, really. Forgot to rest and save before venturing out? Good luck.
... Yes, I just ragequit after finishing the objective of opening a door and then dying to the cyclops guarding it... Just as I got it down to a quarer of its health. Should have run away. But I didn't.
It's been a few years since I played this game, but I remember loving the combat mechanics. Jumping and climbing on enemies is really cool. Though I installed a few mods to make it a bit easier... I’m not a fan of difficult combat lol. Too bad I couldn’t get into the story enough to keep playing, since that’s essential for me to enjoy anything. The constant comments from the pawns were getting repetitive too and kinda took me out of the experience. I tried playing the Dark Souls series and couldn’t get into it either.
The character creation/customization is one thing I really appreciate from Dragon’s Dogma, I haven't seen a lot of games that have the same options like changing the height, posture, and things like that.
Never played Dragon's Dogma, but I always wanted to try it out eventually. Is it really similar to FromSoft's games? That would be bad news for me, my patience DOES have a limit haha.
Yes, but also no. I’ve also seen it compared to dragon age inquisition too. You’re the chosen one, but you suck.
There is no ‘git gud’ of reading boss animations, for example. The sword and sorcery theming does fit the dark souls theme, and exploration is rewarded. It’s on sale on Playstation at the moment, I got it for 5 euros.
This is one of my favorite games of all time. I would not compare it to FromSoft’s games though. It is difficult at times, but not as frustratingly difficult as those games (I hate those games because I suck at them). I think Dragons Dogma is far more approachable and rewards players for taking their time. Also, the pawn system helps out a lot too.
I didn’t necessarily mean a direct comparison, but more the theming and the exploration / world building and storytelling. It’s far more rewarding than dodging boss attacks and whittling health down, like in fromsoft games.
