Thanks for the response! Seems like a great plan. Great points you (and the other responses) made about people searching for SBC. Maybe, even if the name of the magazine gets changed, something about SBC could still be left in there (or in the magazine profile? I dunno I’m new to lemmy/kbin =P) so people could still find it.
Definitely some growing pains. The bandwidth attributed was not ready for the surge of people jumping ship in less than a week. It’s already much better. On the first days, just loading the landing page would take a handful of tries (each try also adding traffic and snowballing the issue)
Also, was this ridiculously hard to make an account for, for anyone else?
Instance has been getting completely hammered with the reddit exodus. We're talking tens of thousands of users added within days. It had 11422 at the half year (early June-ish), is now sitting at 41170 . 30k users, 75% increase in user base in just a week. It'll get better when things stabilize a bit.
I actually had a very easy time making my account. Hardest part was finding a way to make the front page not look like a sparse mobile-optimized information wasteland, but one link to userstyles later (Reddig for Lemmy) and I'm good to go.
It does suck that Beehaw defederated from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works, so people who made accounts on one of them (like me) will be missing out on any users from there. That said Beehaw has the most blocks on other instances out of anything, so I feel like that's not really an "us" problem.
As someone completely new to handheld retro gaming and searching for "retro" communities I only managed to find this one on accident. Even as I type this I have no idea what "SBC" stands for. Had the About page not explained things I would have continued right past this.
My 2 cents from someone discovering this scene post reddit exodus.
