Michigan’s new budget funds $5 million in research into a mileage-based tax to fund road repairs. The state will also seek federal grant funding for a pilot project.
Why aren’t we taxing by weight yet? Trucks have been destroying our roads for years and we still have laughable weight limits. Taxing by weight would also prioritize smaller EVs rather bigger monstrosities that lead to more traffic related deaths.
They currently charge higher registration fees for plug-in hybrids and EVs because of the lack of gas tax. A miles-traveled tax might make sense, but then we need to worry about miles driven out-of-state or on private roads.
