The next Universes Beyond crossover booster set for Magic: The Gathering has been revealed. Say goodbye to Middle-earth, as in 2025 we’ll be heading to the worlds of Final Fantasy for a full-blown celebration of Square Enix’s long-running JRPG series.
Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that the set isn’t tied to any one game, and will instead draw from all the main-entry series, right up to the recently-released Final Fantasy 16. As this is being described as a tentpole set, we can also expect there to be other tie-in releases like Secret Lairs and Commander decks.
I’ve not been a huge fan of Universes Beyond (Magic the Gathering’s recent line introducing non-Magic IP into the game) - for example, much as I love Lord of the Rings, I’ve been totally uninterested in buying their recent sets based on that - but I will probably be getting this and the supplemental products as a FF fan, to create FF-only decks to play against each other. (Admittedly it helps that I’ve been in a bit of a Final Fantasy-obsessed phase ever since Theatrhythm and the Pixel Remasters came out.)
