Nah, I'm very well aware of the law. On a mooring is not considered underway, and therefore fine to enjoy a beer.
Nice. Iโm not aware of the law, but briefly looked into it and it seemed pretty strict about the coast guard being able to board you at any time you were in the water. I donโt even drink in my bathtub anymore.
Yep they sure can, and I've had them try at some truly hairbrained moments. One time we were in a race under full sail, and had just entered the harbor when one of their vessels pulled up beside us and demanded we stop so that they could board for a random inspection. We tried to tell them we were in the middle of a race (and frustratingly had been doing quite well) as we started to douse the sails, but they insisted, and then started getting angry we weren't immediately stopping.
Can you imagine the absurdity of a boat full of teenagers trying to shout over the water to men with machine guns and explain that a sailboat in a confined channel can't just stop on a dime?
But besides, inside it's the harbor patrol, not the coast guard you'll be keeping an eye out for! ;)
Wow, thatโs nuts. Expecting a sailboat to stop on a dime is enough of an ask on its own. What do you do, drop anchor and hope for the best? โYes sir, let me turn on my reversersโ and then you run to grab a hand-held battery operated fan.
What a bunch of buzzkills. In fairness though, you couldโve been terrorists or pirates. You can never be too safe in domestic waters. โWhy did you run?โ as you try to explain the concept of a race.
I donโt boat, donโt have a boat. On occasion I will motorboat but thatโs a little different. Now youโve got me thinking..
