I finished painting the stairs
...or rather the woodwork around them. It was a DIY job that I was not looking forward to. The steps are covered in carpet, so it proved particularly challenging not to make a mess. Before doing the actual painting, I had to repair several minor scuffs and scratches.
The end result is quite decent.

Im happy your result was good. I have been thinking about to do the same thing for the last six months, not sure if i should remove the carpet, I have feeling it will be too much work.
I decided against it due PTSD from the last time that I had to strip those stairs.
