Where does the misspelling "Mastadon" come from?

I see it everywhere, reddit comments, lemmy, news articles and mastodon itself. How did this misspelling become so common?

Just from the way it's pronounced in English: ma · stuh · daan. It sounds more like an 'a' than an 'o'.
- I always said ma stow don.
  
  I pronounce it mas · to · don. Maybe the miss-spelled name for it is based on how people pronounce it verbarly.
- in british english we pronounce it as mahs • tuh • don
better than Masturdon...
Had me thinking I just never noticed the social media platform was misspelled before...
