And now another subscriber :-)
A bit late to the party; i have been doing searches for kdrama instances, but nothing popped up until the lemmy update.
Glad to have found one now. There is another one too, but it only has one post: !kdrama, i think on lemmy.world
Welcome! There are 4 of us now! Yea the one on chirp.social is the only kdrama community I found, but there was no post before this. I'm still trying out different lemmy apps on Android, but for some reason this one appears as [email protected] as well. Is it because that's my instance (lemmy.world) and I created the first post? Anyway, this is still pretty new to me so will have to find out more.
How's Again, My Life? That's the one with Lee Joon Ki, right?
I think many people have multiple lemmy apps on android, i'm no exception. But i found it through lemmy's website. Now lemmy has updated, the search function seems to work better.
Political dramas are something i avoid if american. But somehow, kdramas make it interesting. This one has the tiniest little fantasy premise (hence the title).
So, i'm currently watching the final episode, yes with Lee Joon Ki, and i'm on the edge of my seat.
I also love the cast.
A few months ago i took a subscription for Viki rakuten, because i can't get enough of kdramas. I also fell in love with the language.
I'm drawn to the language as well. Seems a lot more efficient compared to English. Yea Viki seems to have a good selection of kdramas. What sort of dramas do you normally watch?
I'm currently following 3 on-air dramas: See You in My 19th Life, King The Land, and Numbers. I'm loving 19th Life, kinda okay with King, and losing interest with Numbers.
I actually like a lot of different genres; i often like fantasy dramas, like a korean odyssey; hotel del luna and such.
But also more criminal/serial killer series, like come and hug me; signal; through the darkness.
Zombie series, like Kingdom and zombie detective.
I do like romance, but i really dislike the display of weak women.
I have to be honest, i do have some criticisms regarding kdrama too, for instance the alcohol culture, dragging drunk women around on someone's back, or dead fish kisses. I'm also not a fan of misunderstandings that drag along, while they could have just talked to each other and it would have been solved.
I'm not sure it's all about genres that attract me. I think i partly decide to watch when i see certain actors and actresses in the cast. Or when people recommend certain kdramas - that's what i liked on reddit; r/kdramarecommends was a great source and i'm hoping we can do this here too.
Sounds like we have similar approach to our drama selection, though mine is really more depending on my mood at the time of choosing. I do gravitate more towards action/crime dramas and less towards sageuk, but as long as the story looks interesting I'd watch. Oh and definitely no makjang for me. Tried a few episodes of Penthouse and World of The Married, yea nah.
Oof it will take much longer for us to reach the levels of those two subs, especially with the lack of userbase here. I did see some lemmings who sail the high seas asking about places to watch or get some kdramas, so I think there is some interest.
I learned what sageuk is - which i have watched a couple that i liked - but i don't know what makjang is. I did a search and it sounds like it might be like soaps?
And sure, it will take a while to become bigger, but i think we might attract people over time by just posting.
I don't think really think that we will get a massive flood of ex-redditors at once, but i do believe that it might become a little stream that will grow along the way. A tiny percentage of those will be interested in kdrama and when they see an active community, which gets crawled by search engines, people will join.
It will just take a long time, would be my guess, but i can be patient.
But i was already thinking about putting some posts out, just to show that this is already an active - tiny - community.
Yes, makjang is basically a very drawn out soap that will test your imagination and patience. Some people seem to like it, and I think the most popular dramas in Korea are usually of the makjang variety.
Please put some posts out when you feel like it! I'm trying to decide if we need to move to another instance, since chirp.social seems to be on kbin and could be difficult to manage if we're all coming from lemmy side. Do you think it's worth a shot to join forces with the other kdrama community? They've already got a mod there and with us being there we'd have more users too.
