As early as 1935, Alfred Finnie, a gay Black man in Chicago, was throwing glamorous Halloween balls on the city’s South Side.
The phrase “gay Christmas” itself goes back to the mid-20th century as well. According to Stein, it’s thought to be an evolution of “bitches Christmas,” a costumed celebration that originated in Philadelphia in the 1950s and ’60s.
