Explanation: General von Steuben was the man most responsible for turning the Continental Army of the US Revolutionary War from a bunch of rag-tag militia into a proper military force. He was also as openly gay as one could be in that era, and after the war, retired to a country estate in New York with his two [ahem ahem] 'adopted sons', both strapping young officers he met during the war.
