Portland will begin enforcing new homeless camping ban Monday
The city will narrowly focus enforcement at first on homeless camps that it believes present the greatest health and safety risks.
"The new rules require people who are offered shelter to accept it or face penalties, and it directs homeless individuals that they must keep their camping area tidy if they can’t access shelter. The ordinance scales back the potential of a 30-day stint behind bars for violators to just seven days and emphasizes a preference to offer offenders diversion."
So it costs $100 to camp in public in Portland, got it.
"For rich people, a parking ticket is not a penalty. It's simply what it costs to park there."
I’m a huge fan of day fines for that reason. It’s something I wish we’d do in America. It solves that problem in a fair way.
Interesting that they are announcing this before the Supreme Court ruling on the same thing in Grant's Pass... the ruling needs to drop before now and when the Court adjourns on Friday.
I wonder if someone tipped off the city?
