3 0 ReplyDefensive ditch/moat. It's Dutch, I think, so I wiktionaried graft and got
- (chiefly Holland) Obsolete form of gracht (“canal”).

2 0 ReplyNative Dutch guy here: Gracht is the Dutch word for moat indeed. The picture is Dutch, though a 17th century version of it obviously.

It's got ducks swimming in it. I'm not a language scientist but that looks to be swamp German of one variety or another. Lowlands+duckies equals moat... Probably
