What happened to AITA?
Instead of going private, they only restricted posting to mod-only
It became that which it always feared: the asshole
Irony happened.
They actually are bringing awareness to the issue in a direct way by not allowing new submissions, and making posts like this to bring awareness to the situation. I consider what they're doing a net good.

Jokes aside, I think AITA is blocking new submissions.
Certainly the last post on the sub is from a mod describing the blackout, which was published 9 hours ago.
So, they might have decided to stay public for exposure to the issue. But there is no new content flowing
