The government is unveiling its plan for land transport over the next decade, prioritising more than $20 billion of funding on 14 new roads and public transport links.
Wellington CBD to Airport - second Mount Victoria Tunnel and upgrades to Basin Reserve/Arras Tunnel
Kinda looks like we will be getting this no matter what. About bloody time, too.
I'm with you on the philosophy, it's totally flawed to say "we have a traffic problem so let's build more roads", the Hutt is tragic on the weekends in no small part due to the fact the trains are always not running for maintainece, plus there's no good transport out to wainui etc.
If you spend all your time building roads then people will tightly use those roads. Population of Welly isn't even that big and it's full to the brim with cars. Huge cars that are unnecessary and badly driven.
Remove cars from the roads should be the ultimate goal. Some jobs require vehicles and they should be on the roads but a vast majority commute into the town and then sit in an office all day.
We absolutely need school buses and stop parents picking up kids from schools.
Would likely be a good idea to get shuttle buses to pick up commutes too. We don't all need to drive our utes and SUVs to the city centre every single day. C'mon now.
Part of the issue is people are doing different things on the weekends that aren't easy to do with public transport, such as shopping, sports, visiting friends etc.
It's the same in Wellington, traffic is often worse during the weekend.
Tunnels are great. Anything to reduce the over reliance on roads. Roads just fill with more cars. Considering Auckland only has millions plus folk in it. Mist have less car users and it's a horrible driving experience. Keep pumping money into roads and find it doesn't fix any issues.
Public transportation is the way forward.
Cheaper and better for the environment if it's executed correctly.
Far too much money is squander as a few get rich while we the tax layers are worse off
