The Dissolution of a Monetary Union: The Case of Malaysia and Singapore 1963–1974
Yes, as a boring person this is what's catching my interest on merdeka day. Open access too.
------ Abstract
The abrupt separation of Singapore and Malaysia in 1965 set these two states on separate political trajectories, but the economic ties proved more difficult to untangle. This article explores the nine years of transition required to complete the separation of the monetary systems of the two territories based on new archival evidence. It argues that, while socio-political hostility raged between the two partners, common economic interests prolonged an intimate monetary relationship that extended the interdependence of the two states for many years beyond their formal separation.

Sorry guys, I tried to find an article online that goes more into the historic aspects of the Hungry Ghosts Festival as celebrated here in Malaysia, but literally everything focuses on the now, since this is very much a living experience. I am adamant of posting something about it today regardless, since today's the peak of Ghost Month for those who celebrate it.

Muar used to have its own railway.
---
Perplexity summary (AI generated)
The Muar State Railway was a railroad operating in the district of Muar in Johor, Malaya (now Malaysia) [^3]. It was the second railway line to operate in Malaya[^4]. The railway was built for the people of Muar and was a light railway[^1]. The Muar railway had a distance of about 14 miles and had five permanent stations and eight temporary stations[^3]. In its first years of operation, the Muar State Railway was estimated to own three steam locomotives[^3]. The first two locomotives were ordered from Black, Hawthorn & Co bearing works numbers 962 and 963, while the third Black, Hawthorn & Co locomotive bearing works number 1017 was ordered later on July 5, 1890[^3]. During World War I, new locomotives from the United States were procured[^3]. The railway opened in 1890 and ceased operation in 1929[^3]. Today, Muar has no railway[^3]. In 2017, construction workers uncovered pieces of wood believed to be part of the Muar State Railway line buried along the construction site[^6].

> Beyond the sleepy outskirts of Ipoh and Batu Gajah, lies a small town with an incredible history. Amidst its crumbling shophouses and empty streets, stories of past riches, war, secret societies, and even radioactive minerals intertwine with each other. This is the grand and illustrious story of Pekan Papan; the most intriguing ghost town in Perak.

Got linked to this mainly because berdiskusi over how Singaporeans spell out Malay words and it's essentially because they're localized into teochew and then modern generation use it in romanized spelling instead of restoring the Malay spelling the way Malaysians would tend to do it. A Very Rough Guide to Jugra - Museum Volunteers, JMM
museumvolunteersjmm.com A Very Rough Guide to Jugraby Eric Lim Introduction (3) Channel linking Sungai Langat and Straits of Malacca Photo source : Bukit Jugra – Visit Selangor The starting point of Sungai Langat is at Gunung Nuang on the Titi…
Additional points from me:
- Jugra seems to be a corruption of the name Tanjung Kera. Say it fast 20 times → Jugra.
- Bandar Temasya was the royal capital of Selangor during the Selangor civil war. The previous royal capital was Kuala Selangor and the next one is Klang.
- The Jugra channel was dug by Americans, connecting the swampy inlet of Jugra River to the Langat River. Frank Swettenham narrates how there was much fanfare by locals of Bandar Temasya seeing Langat River pouring out with much force through the newly opened channel since it's a shortcut to the sea compared to the old channel. Now most of the river volume flows through Jugra channel.
